Feature Requests

I posted this in the review on iTunes, but I don't know how much those get read, so I registered here to make my one feature request.

As awesome as the subtitles already are in Air Video, I'd like to see support for stylized/video selected font support. A lot of what I stream is anime fansubs, which I've kept around long after buying the DVDs because the subtitles are often more accurate and better placed/styled (also, hundreds of DVDs are a real pain to rip). They tend to use different colored subtitles, multiple fonts dictated by the video file, and/or karaoke effects. I'm not sure exactly what they use to allow it, but PS3 Media Server that I use for streaming to my XBox/PS3 has support for these, and I'd be extremely happy if Air Video would as well.

On a side note, I second the request for a donation button. I was actually hoping you'd make the iPad version a separate app so that I could pay you guys a bit more. Your app just works far too well for the meager price you ask.

I assume you are talking about SSA formating/effects. Basic formating (bold, italic, etc) is supported, however more advanced styling/effects aren't. We'll consider it for future updates, however currently we have more pressing features to implement.

i just downloaded air video, and i think it's the best app i have on my iphone. it'll be the first app i'll install when my ipad arrives.

just one request, about subtitles. It would be great if in the server we could choose the font color.
White subtitles cannot be read very well if the background of the movie is clear.
if it could be changed in the server options to yellow, orange, green or something like that, it would be perfect.

My feature requests:

iTunes movie album art (for those of us who've spent hours getting iTunes like cover art)
A choice of different icons in the Mac task bar (For example, a black and white monochrome version of the main app logo would look awesome).

For me, that would make the app perfect.

My Feature Request ist the support of Windows MediaCenter files (wtv) ...

Thumbnail caching.

My Movies / MediaBrowser style browsing.

Essentially the ability to read the metadata from movie folders in the embedded xml files created by MyMovies as well as the movie artwork. Then display this info for the movie when it is selected from the list pane rather than simply loading a screenshot of the movie itself.

Air Video depends on FFMpeg for actual transcoding, so the wtv support would have to be implemented in FFMpeg first.

I will add my requests:

Alpabetic scroll listing like in the iPhone Adress Book. Click on K and you scroll to folders starting with K etc...

30 second skip forward during playback - needed to skip commercials and 7 second skip back.

OR understand edl files and allow us to skip to the next marked block. These can be processed into the mp4 file as chapters.

Use the filename to group files. I use sageTV to record my files. I end up having lots of files named:
TheColbertReport-6154863-0.mpg
it would be great if the sever could group all of these together and sort them by file date. That way it would be easier to sort through the 900+ recordings in the directory.
Or filtering. If I start typing The, it filters the list down to all the ones that start with "The" etc...

The context is that I am hoping that this can become the iPhone / iPad SageTV app that doesn't yet exist. To do that, I need to be able to find the show I want to watch easily and then have equivalent player controls. I do encode some of the recordings to be in the right format for the iPod and I convert the edl commercial file into chapter files to be inserted into the video (I can post details of how I do that if you want). But it would be much nicer to use this app to choose an arbitrary video to watch.

So far it looks great and very promising.

Yes, it would be really nice to have that implemented as a default internal server; whenever you're browsing any server, you could check videos that would then transfer to the iPhone in some way (background transfer is probably iffy since it would require Air Video to be running for a long period of time, maybe the app file sharing while docking over USB would be a better option).
I'd love to be able to make a selection of movies to take with me on a long plane trip.

Also, I would love to have sort options (by creation date, by date of last modification, by type...) it would really help navigate large collections.

I'm very pleased not only by the excellent performance of the app, but also by its stability and user interface. The iPad version is brilliant. Nicely done guys.

Ah yes, now it does after I rebooted. Might be a bug. I originally connected with the free version if that matters.

It would be a killer feature for the player to remain playing the audio in the background once you left the app. As i understand it, the iPhone os 4 sdk allows for this type of thing. The issue comes up when you're watching something and you want to check your email.

Either way, congrats on a fantastic app. It's my favorite ipad app right now, and I've just been pleasantly surprised over and over again by all of the top quality features.

Air Video Server absolutely rocks.
I have 3 Air Video Servers running in the house. One is just for Children/Family video for my Grandchildren and the others are for more mature content.

When I first installed the app sometime ago, the system required that the Server PIN be entered every time that app was started.

This was PERFECT for my use and home environment. Why? My grandchildren use my iPhone and iPad and should not have access to

R-Rated material on the other servers.

So, could you please have a setting that would force that the PIN be entered at every launch. This would be set at the server.

Love this app! Would it be possible to support closed caption please?
To add the CC in the mp4, you can use Handbrake to rip the DVD or there are some movies on iTune store.
