First thoughts on this App were that it is GREAT.....then the problems started - I have set the IP manually and initially can watch video converted "on the fly" as well as "convert" vido, however after about 15 minutes of working (e.g. streaming or converting a video) I get the following error: Communication Error - Error occurred while communicating with server: Timed Out .............This is happening consistently and is at the point that the App is becoming unusable. Yeah if i close down the IPOD App and restart I connect again and can start, however only for about 15 minutes when the same occurs.
* I have a Dual Core PC, BTHomeHub - Any ideas would be much appreciated!!!

Hi,

if you get connection timeout that means something is blocking the communication. It's either a firewall or your router. This is a networking problem and is not directly related to Air Video.

Yeah i understand the view, however this doesn't explain why the App works for varying amounts of time, before developing a time-out condition - Firewall is not the issue and can't see that the router is the cause either... any more thoughts?

iPhone/iPod touch have a known problem when it drops wireless connection with certain routers. As far as connection timeouts are concerned they always are hardware or firewall issue. Air Video only tells the iPhone to send request X to computer Y. Whether and how it gets there is completely out of our control.

Anyway, this could be a Bonjour problem. You can try connect to your computer using Server PIN. On the Remote tab check 'Enable Access from Internet" and uncheck "Automatically Map Port".

Then on iPod touch tap + to add new server, chose "Enter Server PIN" and enter the server pin.

Hi Admin - Already done this and so far it appears to be working - hasn't timed-out after 45 mins so far, using a converted file with the Server pin option - but when using Live Conversion the video stops after a while - app states loading, then the screen moves back to the "Play with Live Conversion" screen - If this is resolvable I will be a very happy chappy - p.s. your help is much appreciated as this App has the potential, if i can get it to work consistently, to be extremely useful!!

I would need to see the live conversion log when this happens.

Looking at the live conversion logs there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with it. Does it happen all the time that the video stops during playback and returns to the previous screen? Or is that not what happens?

Yeah - pretty much - works for a period of time, then the video stops, the screen shows "loading...", then returns to the previous screen. This doesn't appear to happen when the video has been pre-converted

If you play same file twice (from the beginning). Does it stop on the same spot?

No - the point that it stops varies and it occurs on every video I have tried, using the Play with Live Conversion option and when i come out of the App and go back in, the option to carry on from the last point is available and allows the video to continue from that point....until it stops again

The reason why I asked about stops is that if the stops were on same time it would mean problem with conversion. If the stops are random it is because the connection has been dropped.
When the connection is dropped during regular streaming it is possible to retry the request because regular streaming can access various parts of the file on demand.
However live conversion is basically a continuous stream (this is a bit simplified) so when the connection drops iPhone media player can not retry and the playback stops.

OK - Why does the connection not drop when playing a pre-converted version of the video? I can understand that if the connection drops whilst the live conversion is taking place, recovery isn't possible - Are you saying that the connection may be dropping whilst playing a pre-converted file, but in this instance the process continues when the connection re-establishes?

If the file is already converted for iPhone playback the playback is handled differently. The player can seek in the file and can access parts of the file randomly. Thus when connection is dropped the player can retry the request and get part of the file again.
