Because my CPU is 100% while watching a movie, it has lots of compression artifacts and it still shows the subtitles from a .srt file.
Reasons enough to believe it isn't doing passthrough.

here are my logs

...

This doesn't look like the passthrough is enabled. Did you enable it in Global Settings?

Yes I have checked it in the Global Settings.
After that it still gives me only the option Play with Live Conversion.

But you use the passthrough with live conversion , there is not going to be a choice with passthrough other then in global settings.

Attempting to watch any .mkv video with passthrough enabled causes Air Video to crash on my iPad 3. I've tried a few different 1080p and 720p videos, all to the same effect. They play fine when passthrough is disabled.

You need to use Play with live conversion even with passthrough enabled. I admit it is a bit confusing. This will be reworked in Air Video 3.

The video in question is Hi10, that is not supported by iPhone/iPad decoder. We'll detect those in future and disable passthrough. Does other (regular, not High 10) video also crash Air Video for you? If so, which device do you have?

I tried another video using passthrough that I don't think is Hi10 that also crashed my iPad 3. However, the log is very brief--it doesn't seem like it got very far at all:

This is really weird, it looks like it crashed even before transcoding started. Can you try to restart the iPad?

I restarted my iPad 3, but the same thing occurred. But after more testing, I can report that it only happens with a specific set of videos encoded the same way. I played another .mkv file encoded with h.264 high profile and it played fine with passthrough. I wish there were some good way to give you more info about video causing the crashes. Do you have any recommendations?

Right, the problem is the program crashes before it can even generate a conversion log...

The weird thing here is that the client crashes before it gets any data at all (otherwise something would be in the log), I don't quite understand why that happens.

Oké but that still doesn't explain why it doen't use passthrough when I play H264 files.

It really doesn't. Can you try to remove Air Video completely from your device and reinstall it from App Store?

Admin et al.,

I thought I had this figured out, but a bit confused as it turns out, having just read a couple of Admin's recent posts. I have the latest Beta (3) and the brand new AirVideo client on my iPhone4. Sitting here on my local LAN, I see options like always for "Play" and "Play with Live Conversion"...my typical operating procedure for 2 years has been to simply use "Play" when I'm here on the local LAN and "Play with Live Conversion" when I'm remote. My understanding (perhaps wrong) was that regular "Play" meant that there was no coversion of the file at all. Is that correct???? Of course, I understand I have to Play with Live conversion when I'm remote, the bandwidth on my remote connection (especially 3G) is not going to be nearly enough to play without converting, I totally get that. But again, my confusion is that I always thought simple "play" meant no conversion at all, just my straight HB-encode was coming through (typically m4v output from Handbrake, usually "High Profile"). The confusion comes in because now we have "passthrough", and I've enabled that of course, but not sure how to invoke it. More importantly, I don't understand how that is any different than simple "Play". Again, keep in mind I have perfect encodes from the latest Handbrake (0.9 and they are all .m4v files using Handbrake's "High" preset. I use Airplay to display from my iphone4 onto my AppleTV3. I also use AirVideo client on the Mac from time to time when I'm traveling. I have all my native BluRay rips from makemkv as well, so the large source rips are in my posession (and yes, I own all these movies). I have never tried streaming a native .mkv (they are like 30GB apiece, but I suppose I could if there is some benefit quality-wise). I have a 70inch Sharp Elite TV, so any additional quality I can get on my local LAN here would be great.

Can you set me straight here guys? What am I missing about the difference between "Play" and the new "passthrough" option?? I have a 5.1 surround system audio-wise btw, if that matters.

Thanks!! Absolutely could not live without AirVideo, it's easily the most impressive app I've got, and nearly completes my plan for world domination and all that
