So after much research, I have found that applications can indeed push out 1280x720 (720p) video via the VGA dock connector, they just have to enable it. Can airvideo do this? From what my TV is telling me I'm only getting 1024x768.

I think because I'm only getting a 1024x768 resolution the picture has black bars on the side, and not just the top (as expected for most movie Aspect ratios). I would like the picture to take up the whole screen length wise as most HD movies do..

Hi,

The TV out code in case of Air Video is specific to iOS Media Player component and we can't really affect it.

Are you sure? Below is a cut and paste from Apple's site and from another site. These examples might be specifically talking about outputing your own UI to the different resolutions, I'm not sure if
mplayer will honor this, but I think it's worth a shot of looking into it

Support for External Displays and Projectors
An iPad can now be connected to an external display through a supported cable. Applications can use this connection to present content in addition to the content on the device’s main screen. Depending on the cable, you can output content at up to a 720p (1280 x 720) resolution. A resolution of 1024 by 768 resolution may also be available if you prefer to use that aspect ratio.

To display content on an external display, do the following:

Use the screens class method of the UIScreen class to determine if an external display is available.
If an external screen is available, get the screen object and look at the values in its availableModes property. This property contains the configurations supported by the screen.
Select the UIScreenMode object corresponding to the desired resolution and assign it to the currentMode property of the screen object.
Create a new window object (UIWindow) to display your content.
Assign the screen object to the screen property of your new window.
Configure the window (by adding views or setting up your OpenGL ES rendering context).
Show the window.

Yes, I am sure. Getting video played over TV out is different from "regular" TV out support.

Ok, So I think the best solution to getting the best possible quality you can get from the iphone 4/Ipad is to use the VGA out connector, plus a VGA to HDMI scaler. That way it converts the 1024x768 signal to the proper 1280x720 which is720p. There is also the option to get a VGA to 1080p (1920x1080) converter. I would probably just suggest a 720p converter.. Using one of these 2 options you should be able to get a picture that will fill up the screen (At least horizontally for most HD movies)

It sucks that you have to do all this to output HD quality, when the apple component cables should be able to do it.. Unfortunately they are limited to I believe 480p.

Youtube example of it..
