I have been trying to get the Air Video to work from an XP machine over 3G. As far as I can tell I've tried everything, such as port forwarding, shutting down all my firewalls and manually adding the ip address to the software. I'm far from a networking expert so I'm stuck as to what to try next! Any ideas?!

Edit: Tried one more thing in the router settings and it worked! So, its working over 3G. Can video also be streamed over standard cellular networks (not 3G)? I'm assuming not! Also, can the application 'resume play' if I stop a file halfway through? Many thanks!

I'm glad you got Air Video working over 3G. It should get much easier after next (major) update. Air Video Server will take care of the port mapping. It will also track your public IP address in case you don't have stable public IP address (which most users don't).

Streaming video over GPRS/EDGE does not really work. The connection is just too slow.

Air Video can resume playback. If the video is already converted it will automatically resume from last position. If the video is watched with live conversion Air Video asks before playback whether you want to resume or start from beginning.

I expected GPRS/EDGE would be a problem. Trouble is, my 3G connection is bad!

Anyway, really looking forward to the next version!

Hi, I have had success getting my airvideo to work using my 3g connection, but the problem is come the next day, it fails to connect with an error message of Communication error unexpected end of data.

I have setup No-Ip on my home PC, so connection to it first time works. But the next day, it will no longer connect and I cannot get a reconnection. If I were to create a new host on no-ip, then connect my PC to that, re-add the server on my phone - it works fine?????

Does the phone retain some address details? Can these be cleared down anywhere..?

Hi,

Air Video does not cache IP address anywhere. But it is possible that iPhone DNS cache did have your old IP address. I don't know if there is any way to flush iPhone DNS cache. Anyway, this will not be necessary after next client update. It should track the server IP address without the need for dynamic DNS.

Streaming over 3G works here for me. IP changes, I use dyndns.org, are not cached by my iPhone.

Thanks Michael (Mogway), I have downloaded dyndns, so will see if this offers a more stable connection.

Ok!! I think I have sussed what the issue is. When I register with the likes of DYNDNS, NO-IP and then setup a host name, that host name is sync'd with my routers current IP. But as soon as my router changes it's IP address the connection is broken.

Am I doing something stupid?

You have to refresh the IP-Address at your dynamic DNS service. Some router have such function to do this automatically. If not, you can use an application for this (search@google)

Thanks for the link, I had a read-thru and as I thought, the purpose of the dyndns update is to update the host client with my routers IP as it changes.

It is this which I believe to not be occuring, as what I was experiencing was as my router ip address changes. My host name on the DNS site, is still (under the details section) showing the IP address it was originally synced with, when first created.

I must be missing something simple - so apologies if this is all a stupid question, but networking was never a strong point of mine..

and thanks for all your help.

no problem

what kind of OS do you use, and with dynamic DNS service?

This site is in german, but i think it gives you an provider and client overview. Kostenlos means free of charge.
http://netzadmin.org/ddns-provider.php

So you can take a look at the websites to find a client for you. Maybe there are equal summaries at another english site.

I'm curious: What kind of files/resolutions are you getting to stream over 3G? I can't seem to convert to a low enough resolution to get 3G streaming to work without stalling every minute or so.

I test it with various files and resolutions and the default settings on the iPhone.

Sometimes I notice that the G3 connection has different quality and the bandwidth is lower, although the signal strength is good.

In this case you can play on your iPhone with the conversion settings:
* decrease Target Resolution
* decrease Video Quality

In future we will also add option to reduce frame rate which should help reducing the bandwidth; Also in next server beta the audio bitrate will be reduced on lower quality settings.

And which resolutions and file types are you finding that work?

Yes, I'm using the lowest resolution and quality possible on an xvid file with full strength 3G signal. Plenty of buffering. I'd like to know more about what's working for you if you care to share
