This is an excellent work. It had ever worked perfectly on my Debian. However after I reinstalled Debian and followed the same step. It has not work now. I can't connect this server with my ipad airvideo client. The error information is as followings. Anyone has some idea? Thanks in advance.

I have resolved this issue. The reason is the JDK can't reach the network if the net.ipv6.bindv6only parameter is set as 1. This parameter is defined in file /etc/sysctl.d/bindv6only.conf. After I set it as 0 and executed 'invoke-rc.d procps restart', it works well again.
I hope it can be helpful for those using Debian and experiencing the same issue
I'm having the same problem with debian squeeze...
The issue is that I actually don't use ipv6 (build in the kernel in squeeze, so disabled through grub through /etc/default/grub GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="ipv6.disable=1")
When I try to run 'invoke-rc.d procps restart' I get :
"Setting kernel variables ...error: "net.ipv6.bindv6only" is an unknown key
failed."
Any ideas?
Thanks

First thing, this is an awesome app. Thanks very much for the effort to make it so.
Second, I'd like to add my request for Linux support. I have Mac and Windows machines to run the Air Video server but the bulk of my media files are on a server running Ubuntu/Debian.
(OK, so now I go to the end of the thread and see progress already advanced. Excellent!)

If you read this topic, you would notice Linux support is already underway and in Alpha. Im using it and love it. No more using a windows VM for Airvideo. I can take advantage of my quad core.

Does the AirVideo Conversion feature work with the linux server? I click convert on a video and it seems to begin, but never shows up as a converted file.
Should I paste a log file from somewhere?

Try running the AirVideo server directly from the command line and post the output here. For instance, my command is:
change your paths as necessary and post the output here.

i simply want to say thank you for this nice piece of software.
i used it for quite some time with an ipod and ipad client, served by a windows machine.
recently i bought a linux nas (qnap) and started investigations on how to run avs on it. with the help of this and the qnap forums i was able to achieve that goal. qnap-howto -> http://forum.qnap.com/viewtopic.php?f=177&t=32731&start=0
having read that live conversion on a nas is unlikely to work, i thought i would have to remux my whole library from mkv(x264/ac3) to mp4(x264/ac3/aac) and started making tests. remuxing of some testmovies went fine and fast and native streaming from the nas via avs is working excellent.
cause i'm a natural lazy but curious guy i started to playing around with the live conversion, hoping to avoid library remuxing. the results were surprisingly positive.
ipod is doing fine in every resolution and max. bandwith. the ipad will work without interruption up to a horizontal resolution of around 640-720px. one have to play a bit with the conversion settings because the results are a bit different from movie to movie. even if they have the same video size and codec. finding the lower limit that works fine with many movies is a quick task and if your sources are of good quality the results will still look good on the ipad. sharp and without visible artifacts.
below are some test results. maybe it is useful for someone comparing them with there own system.
at the end of the post is a whole debug output of a conversion start. could be helpful for comparing ffmpeg build options, etc.
kind regards,
dreamkp

ah ha. got it working, once I realized it was an iptable chain getting in the way. Nice app.
Does the linux version recurse subdirectories?
It does fine as long as the videos are in the directory specified in the path, but does not show any vids in subdirectories.
if the path in test.properties is Movies:/path/to/Movies
Movies/video.mpg will show in the list
Movies/ will so 0 files if the file is in Movies/Comedy/video.mpg
Cropping doesn't work?
I have no windows PC's to compare functionality. I'm a linux only home, so yeah I'm happy they built the alphas.

Subdirectories are working fine for me on alpha4 with Ubuntu 9.04 on an ext3 fs.
Can you post your log?

Actually, it appears to be working now. I put a bunch of videos into the same working dir to test, and it works. It's probably a permissions issue, I'll look into it later.
My setup (for testing only) is:
Ubuntu 9.04 (Core2 Duo @3GHz, ext4) server/htpc on LAN (because I could not get HDMI audio working under Fedora )
Fedora 12 (AMD 64 X2 4200+ @2GHz, ext4) Desktop
All wired through gigabit wireless router
Ubuntu media shares are mounted on the Fedora desktop via autofs (which is basically on-demand NFS)
The AirVideo server is running from the Fedora box
And of course the iPhone 3G is on the wireless.
That might be the most convoluted setup possible, but it was only for testing. Everything goes onto the ubuntu HTPC box when it works. I suspect the top level directory had less restricted permissions than the subs.
Even with this inefficient setup, it's streaming 1080 content just fine. I really am a fan of ffmpeg too.
If this thing could stream iso's I'd pay double for it, and I'm as cheap as they come. If it could do audio files I'd leave an iPod velcro'd to the wall in my basement connected to the stereo forever.

Hello.
I've gotten it to work with wine before (But it was painfully slow)
So I would like to get this native linux working.
So here is my issue.
I'm running a fresh install of ubuntu 10.04 (32 bit)
I follow the directions as best I can here: http://wiki.birth-online.de/know-how/hardware/apple-iphone/airvideo-server-linux
The only hiccup I have is it says I need java so i apt-get "openjdk-6-jre-headless"
then the server will run and I'm able to see file names and navigate my videos directory (I only changed the file location in my properties file, besides that it's stock)
So I am able to connect to the server and I can browse through my directories but none of the thumbnails will load and if I click on a video it just tells me that something has happened and asks me to report it.
I am then sent back to the server list
So i tried removing the openjdk-6-jre and installing the sun jre and I got the same results.
(I've tried this on 2 different machines with the same result so I think the issue is me)
Here is the CLI output
This is what is shown when I start the server.
Then I navigate a directory with videos on it and this is the output:
P.S. how do I make it so I can run it and then close the terminal window? normally i would just do a -d flag but that doesn't seem to work.
Thank you for the help.
P.P.S. small feature request for a batch conversion... Maybe a button to go to check list mode and then I can select all the videos I want offline convert.

Hi people!
I can confirm that the new client version 2.4.0 and 2.4.2 works well with Alpha4 release of the linux server.
Read more about it here or see my signature -> http://inmethod.com/forum/posts/list/1856.page
PS! It would be very helpful for others if you post your findings and other helpful hints in the same topic in the above link.

Isn't 2.4.2 a server version? Not a client version? Is there a linux version of 2.4.2?
I don't see a 2.4.2 client in iTunes.

The only way I can reproduce this error message is if the path in test.properties does not match the file location. I tried everything from symbolic links to permissions, and the only way I got this same message was a missing file. Which is weird since it appears to have been found in the first couple lines you posted.

you can set it up as a service
http://wiki.birth-online.de/know-how/hardware/apple-iphone/airvideo-server-linux
or try detaching it by running it with "&" as in:

Not to step on your toes, but as a suggestion, I would recommend:
"nohup" allows the script to keep running after you exit your shell. Using "&" alone runs the risk that the script to die when you quit your shell (if the shell sends the SIGHUP signal, the script will die. nohup tells the script to ignore SIGHUP). Using "&" alone may work in most shells, but some will kill all background processes when they quit.
"2>&1" tells the script to log errors and regular output to the same file.
">airvideo.log" tells the script to send output into airvideo.log. This file will get VERY large after a while, so I'd only use this for debugging purposes.
"&" at the end tells the script to run in the background.
As another suggestion, I like to manage my own Java JRE/SDK installations:
1) download a new JRE from java.sun.com and extract it to /home/apps (giving me a directory named "/home/apps/jdk1.6.0_18/" which contains the bin/, jre/ and lib/ directories).
2) create a symbolic link named "/home/apps/java" which points to the latest JRE (`ln -s /home/apps/jdk1.6.0_18/ /home/apps/java`).
3) set JAVA_HOME to /home/apps/java in the .bashrc file in my home directory. (`export JAVA_HOME=/home/apps/java`)
4) include /home/apps/java/bin in your path (`PATH=$JAVA_HOME/bin:$PATH`)
This way, all you need to do to update your JRE is (1) extract a new JRE where-ever you want and (2) update the /home/apps/java link to point to the new JRE directory. This gives you more control over which version of java you use, and don't have to rely on packages rolled together by your linux distribution (which may or may not include/lack features you need).
