TV Out won't work with iOS Firmware 4.0

iOS Firmware 4.0 breaks Air Video TV Out support.

In 4.0 Apple disabled the only workaround we could have used to get TV Out support in Air Video. That means once you upgrade your firmware the TV Out will not work anymore. We'll try to find another one, but when or (or even if) that will happen is too soon to say.

Re:TV Out and iOS Firmware 4.0

I was under the impression that, like with the iPad in 3.2, iOS 4 was actually adding the ability for any third party app to use video out. I thought this was mentioned in one of the previews and Apple also now lists the dock connector to VGA adapter as an accessory for iPhone 4. Is this not a feature in iOS 4 like it is on the iPad? That's a bummer as I thought Netflix would work great with that feature too.

That's very bad news. Air Video has become one of the main programs I use on my iPod. To the point that I won't upgrade the firmware until Air Video can work with it.

And apparently that StreamToMe app found a workaround, hopefully air video can find a way too.
Latest version of StreamToMe (3.0 26 June 2010) has same problem. If you launch the video with the phone held vertically it just outputs audio.

I don't know if anyone else can try this and see if they can confirm this working for them.

Hopefully if StreamToMe found a loophole it could also be added to AirVideo.
Thanks for the tip. I only tried it today. It worked once - then stopped. After that - audio only. I'll reset everything (server, iPod) and try again.

Has anyone got it working with the Apple Dock - rotated to landscape? Would be nice to still be able to use the Apple remote.

Whatever the case, I'm seriously pissed off with Apple.

It would need only to become aware that StreamToMe is using a feature which — you suggest — Apple has prohibited. Since TV Out is not hidden or secret, but openly promoted by StreamToMe, it is reasonable to assume that its developer is not doing anything improper.

In the circumstances, it is unseemly for you to imply that its developer is cheating. One thing that is clear is that StreamToMe has succeeded in maintaining TV Out functionality in its competing app.

Pending your official statement or a fix, your app store page should, at least, disclose that TV Out no longer works with Air Video under iOS 4.

Unfortunately that's not how it works. Just because an app gets approved it doesn't mean it only uses published API. There are many ways to conceal usage of private API and get application approved.

We'll have an official statement on this issue, but for now, I'm pretty sure there is no legitimate way to get TV out working with iPhone, iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS with iOS 4 without resorting to private API.
If Apple had chosen to block third party apps from accessing TV Out, it would not need to unearth some hidden, illicit API use.

It is a shame, too, because it is certainly a five star app if it has that functionality.
Using of private API is choice of every developer. TV out is not hidden or secret, however with iOS 4 it's only enabled on iPhone 4 and iPad. (That's official Apple response we got so far).

Well, I had to see for myself if streamtome was able to take advantage of the Universal Dock Composite AV Cable. It does. I have a 3Gs running iOS 4. I refuse to believe that out of all the over 1500 new API's not one of them is an API that allows video to stream out of the Universal Dock. I love Air Video. I believe it to work better than streamtome. I would like to see it continue. By the way I found API's to allow apps to read the meta data from iTune files and to allow programs to play iTune files (possibly DRM files). Good luck, I look forward to an Air Video update. I'm sure you will do a great job!

Oplayer can not compare the picture is not as smooth as AirVvideo. Oplayer interface is also a bit clunky as you have to download the videos to your iPhone taking up your storage space. And The TV out DOES NOT work like claimed by a poster above with 4.0 or perhaps the issue with Oplayer is in 4.01 either way it did not work on my phone. Also you can not access your PC over 3g. IMO Oplayer gets a big thumbs down. Dont waste the 2.99. At the present since both apps cant do TV out stay with Air Video as it is superior.

I guarantee this isnt the only app messed up by the upgrade. Apple should offer us a simple downgrade untill the issue of broken apps is adressed.

I paid good money for many of my apps and I should be able to use the full funcionality. Someone needs to do something Either the third party folks or apple.

For me giving us the option to go back would temporarily give us back our functionality. I think a class action suit would be in order. Against who is hard to tell. Not necessarily against the app makers but allot of people are due refunds for the apps and the cables purchased specifically to use with the apps.

BTW I am not mad at Air Video or Apple I am mad at both for not playing nicely together.

Than I discovered the TV Out problem. Like everyone else I get audio but no video and other apps that use video out work fine.

I don't care right now who is to blame. I think this software is really interesting and hope they get it working again so I can buy the full version, I already bought the other apps on my list and looking forward to getting this one.
For all people who own an iphone 4 and have problems, maybe you should try a restore. I have an iPhone 4 and can use TV-out perfectly. I used it before and after my jailbreak without any problems. Firmware version is 4.0.1. I used both the official Apple composite cables and the Logic3 Pro dock (only composite tested).

I regret having bought Air Video - it seemed to be the perfect solution for me, but the missing TV-out option under iOS 4.0 made it very useless. I waited till yesterday for an update, but nothing came from Inmethod. Now i got "Stream2me" - it works great (but has no convertig option). If Air Video was more expensive i would have required my money back - in this case its not worth the trouble.

Re:TV Out won't work with iOS Firmware 4.0

I updated both the app and the server program. However, TV Out does not work for me. Could be one of two things:

- Jailbreak
- Unofficial cable: http://indashpc.org/new/accessories/cable-av30.html

Since my brother has a non-jailbroken iPhone 4 + the same cable as me and for him it's not working either, I'm going to assume the cable is the problem. Weird, because on the site where I bought it, it says it will work with all firmware versions: http://indashpc.org/new/accessories/cable-av30.html

Any thoughts, admin?

EDIT: I got it to work! Don't know how, though. I installed a TV-Out app from Cydia which didn't quite work as it should, so I unistalled it again. After that, everything worked fine. Maybe I just needed to reboot my iPhone, that's what I did before I uninstalled the Cydia app.

Anyhoo, thanks a lot for the update!

The movie I was attempting to play also works and everything is set up correctly in Air Video. Also i was attempting this over WIFI on my home network.

My iphone is a jailbroken 3G with OS 3.1.3

I read the previous pages but truthfully am slightly confused. Should Air Video TV out work with my setup, is it just a setting i'm neglecting or do i need to kill the jailbreak and download iOS4?

(Or should i just download TV out from Cydia?)

I love the app, probably the best thing i downloaded on the iphone. It worked amazingly well over the weekend on a bad 3G signal! Any help would be much appreciated.
thanks
-Lou

Lou (and others) I occasionally get an issue when attempting to play video out thru a dock purchased from Best Buy. The work around I have found is to exit to the app menu (home) then lift the Touch (8gb 3rd gen, so really 2nd gen with the latest iOS ~ iPhone also I suppose) off the dock and then re-seat back on the dock. What I look for is the volume icon overlay to display on connect, then I can start the AirVideo app and all is good again.

Can't speak for jailbroken devices.

I have noticed buffering issues since I upgraded to Snow Leopard yesterday.

I've read through this entire thread, and I've almost gotten this to work...

I've got a 2nd gen iPod Touch running the latest iOS (4.2.1). I plug it into the cables for the tv, start up the app, and select a video. But once the video starts playing, the video appears on the iPod screen while the sound outputs to the TV. Any ideas on what's going wrong?

EDIT: I just noticed that the video is actually playing over the "iPod is connected to TV" screen...this is visible if you play a movie that doesn't fill the entire iPod screen. Hope this helps.

I ask this as I have tried this with ipod touch ver 4 and ver 3 and neither will play streaming video via an older apple dock with the larger round window on the front.
I can confirm what 'deactive' stated while using an Iphone 4 on both the previous release and the new 2.4.6, however I am using the Apple AV cable (with hdmi out).
This dead air video out issue contiues. Nearly a month and not resolved. I don't like leaving bad reviews at the App Store but this app always kills me. It's been a love-hate thing with Air Video.
Ditto on: can't control the playback during video out. There's simply just a swirly circle letting you know that it's still thinking. Interesting though, a Belkin composite video adapter/cable will play the video, but you're screwed if you have to go pee or take the popcorn out of the micro, because you can't pause it. Once you start the video, do not exit the app or yank the adapter/cable, otherwise you'll be forced to do a hard reset (at least you will with an ipod touch 3g) to fully stop the Air Video app in order for you to reopen normally to access the servers or to start playback again, because simply opting out of AV and coming right back to it without a hard reset will leave you with the same lame swirly circle screen.

Dude, did you just skip the last few posts? Calm down - the devs know about this specific issue... the patch will be released soon.

No need to continue stating that this is an issue - if it persists after update 2.4.7, then sure, be upset. Until then, if you can't wait after you've started a video, I suggest you use the convert function, then drop the files onto your iProduct. How often do you really need to pause once you've started a video anyway? If by "hard reset" you mean killing the function in multitasking terms.. then sure, but this is still just a "soft" reset - and again, this has already been stated. Y you so mad?

Hello.

First of all... what do you call "TV Out"? Just to understand the most of the posts of this topic.

Let my tell my story. This is really weird.

Nothing to do with cable, AV, etc... just to do with Air Video, Apple TV in a Local WiFi.

AirVideo is an app that really works great in my iPad 2. An amazing application. I can watch all types of video. But, when I want to pass a video from the pay version of Air Video app, where it was showing perfectly, to Apple TV 2G, I had the problem than many of you are describing: THE VIDEO KEEPS SHOWING ON THE iPAD, AND ONLY THE SOUND GOES TO THE APPLE TV 2G.

However, one day (yesterday, I think), I read something about rebooting both the device and Air Video Server, I followed that suggestions and, believe it or not, it worked once with a couple of videos.

But since that moment, I haven`t been able to get it again. So now it`s not working again, as it was doing at the begining and I don`t get it no matter the times I reboot any device, server, ATV, etc...

So, for a very little moment, it had nothing to do with 4.3 firmware version. Now, all I can do is to wait for that so important upgrade Mr. Admin is preparing us. LOL

Is this the issue that people is having?

Thanks a lot.

The way Air Video was doing TV out before was a hack that no longer worked properly on 4.3 and we needed to rewrite it. Apple officially supports TV out only on iPhones and iPods with retina displays and iPads.
From Apple developer documentation:
Not all devices support external displays. Currently, external displays are supported by iPhone and iPod touch devices with Retina displays and iPad. Older devices, such as the iPhone 3GS do not support external displays. Connecting to an external display requires an appropriate cable between the device and display.
TV out works with Apple applications they just don't allow it for 3rd party apps. If you updated via the iPhone or iPad, etc.. and have not sync'd to itunes then this works pretty well. I used to to restore my last version of AirVideo. The TV out is working again. Hope this helps

http://gigaom.com/apple/recover-older-versions-of-iphone-apps-after-updating/

After update to 4.3.2 TV Out still worked on my 3gs with air video, just had some bugs. Video/Audio fine, however the whole video would have the busy starburst apple thing going and you couldn't access the controls. After last Air video update it doesn't work at all. No video output. StreamToMe still works fine with TV Out, so obviously it can work. Hope you are working on a fix.

The way TV out worked in previous releases no longer works with firmware 4.3. We had to reimplement it properly. The new implementation doesn't work with your 3rd party cable on iPhone 3G, but that's a detail handled by iOS Firmware and we can't do anything about it. We also can't distribute old versions, each file is signed for certain iTunes account, so you have to have your own file.

Sorry.
If the last version of IOS in the 3g is 4.2.1,
Why you don't identify the device and the version and in the same program
you run the code that it worked before, and in the new devices with the new
IOS you run the new code.
You have both did and only the program will be a few bigger than before.

I don't think that apple say nothing because this you are giving a good service to
your clients.

Becouse that is now with the 3g, but soon with the 3gs, ipad1, ....
What do you think about ?
