Please provide a "Settings" page. From this page, I would like to add an option to auto-start the last played video (i.e. - on startup of Air Video, the last played video will automatically load and present the "Play From" screen.)

Please also consider adding the following features:

- Search. I have a lot of videos and a search feature would make it easier for me to find a video.

- Provide an option to boost the volume of a video. I do not use headphones with my iPod Touch. The built-in speaker is very weak and with some of my videos the audio is hard to hear.

- Allow for “audio only” playback. I sometimes fall asleep listening to a video lecture on my iPod Touch. Using the iPod “Clock” App, I set the Timer on my iPod to “Sleep iPod” after 30 minutes. With video disabled, I am hoping this would extend my iPod’s battery life.

In future we plan to add bookmarking and possibly select last watched video.

Search is a bit tricky - we would have to index the videos. Right now the "benefit" of not indexing it is that you can share entire drive without having to worry how much content you have there and how long will it take to index.

Volume boost is very likely to be added.

we don't allow deleting arbitrary files for security reason. The only files Air Video will allow you to delete are converted files and that is only while the original files exist. I'm new here and a have a feature request!! I downloaded the free Version for iPod and iPhone and have a problem with the Windows Version!! The Problem is that I added a networkfolder from our server and when i want to convert a video (no Live Conversion!!!!) I have a error!! I know the problem!! The problem is that I don't have write permissions on the networkfolder!!! So can you add the option to select the output folder of the converted files???

Displaying number of items in folder should not affect scrolling speed in any way. It's loaded asynchronously. Scrolling is slower because of thumbnails, we are looking for ways to improve the speed.

I am curious as to the ability to add audio streaming to your App or for you to create a separate App (i.e. - for streaming of music)? Since your App, in essence, already streams audio (i.e. - obviously audio is streamed with the video), would it be a major undertaking for you to add the ability to stream only audio? I know there are other Apps that already provide this functionality. However, I believe your App is by far the best App for streaming video and it would be great to have audio as another feature or provided within a separate App ("Air Audio" or "Air Music"?).

I tried renaming my VOB files to .avi and .mpg but still couldn't get get Air Video to admit it could play the file, it just says the file needs to be converted.

Outside of the above feature request (maybe I am begging!) this software is great, very professional and very polished.

One quick question though: When I start it up, it needs to connect to the internet to generate a PIN before my iPod can find the server - is that intentional? Usually I firewall off all programs from internet access unless there is a reason to let them connect.

Two quick things (quick to ask for anyway)

1. As has been suggested, having multiple logins would be awesome. I want my kids to also be able to watch their shows but obviously don't want them being able to access grown up tv.
If, in the PC/mac server app side of things, you could create a user, specify a password and then tick which shares are available to that user, that would be sensational.

2. Im not sure if this has been asked, or how difficult it would be, but could the server app query imdb etc and store a brief plot outline and a movie poster/banner for the media you have.
Similar to media portal and store all the text/jpegs in a folder in the install directory of the app.

Anyway, I have to say this is the best app on my ipod and myself and my mates think you've done a wonderful job.

I just have one feature request. I would really like the ability to shut down, sleep, and wake the computer, right from the iPhone/iPod Touch. Please. Because after you have finished watching a video it would be handy to shut down or put the computer to sleep (and wake it back up again when needed).

I have seen other apps on the App Store (not video streaming ones) that offer this feature but it would be very convenient if Air Video could offer this as well, so it is all in the one app.

The the left and right thirds could be a Skip function.
Either in the ipod app or on the server software you could specify the amount of second the video would skip forward or backward, depending on which side of the screen you tapped.
I know every time you do it would have to rebuffer but it could be a very useful function to skip ads or intro credits...

First wanted to say that so far it's the best value for money I spent on my iPhone.

A few suggestions would make me even happier though :

- A to Z index on the right side of the list for movie titles for faster access
- Auto detection for "check for wifi" (not sure I get why it's there)
- Subtitles (I understand it's coming )
- Possibility to use images on the server for each movie thumbnail (ie same file name, different extension, eventually fixed size)
- Extending on this, possibility to use some xml file that would contain movie infos to display on the list (template would be provided)
- Option to hide file extensions otherwise
- Some kind of control over the iPhone buffer size so it doesn't stop every 10sec on poor connections

And of course a couple of "a boy can dream" requests :

- some coverflow UI for video selection
- OSX desktop client app
- and yeah finally some imdb/movie poster/tv show seasons features ala Plex/Boxee

I would like to congratulate you on a great software program. The only feature that I see you can add, which I also wouldn't mind paying extra, would be for a Windows client software so that you could watch your videos remotely on your computer from your server. That would just be phenomenal. I too recommend just like a person before me did, control screen colors and perhaps brightness (maybe an Apple only restricted feature), louder audio, and variable bit-rate which accommodates to the current network speeds. Hi,
I have a number of tv series extracted as vobs. I used dvd shrink to remove menus and titles and also extracted each episode to single vob file. Although the vob files will not play back natively, they do work when the extension is changed to mpg. I can live stream them over my home network or 3g without any problems.

I use tversity to stream the files to my ps3 which i believe can play vobs or mpgs natively without any conversion.

Maybe this setup will work for you also??

This would indeed be a very useful function. Preferably a client setting, but a more general server setting that controls either the amount of data to buffer or the number of seconds, would work just as well.
It would definitely make this application unbeatable!

4. Auto-mount network drive in mac. Or, support for full network path; i.e. afp or smb://server/media/movies. Currently, if you restart your mac, none of the NAS folders content are available until you browse them in finder.

7. Option to sort video by date of modification or creation. If browsing satellite recorded video, you find the latest at the top.

Hi: I am not sure I understand your point above, but just wanted to add myself to the "Please add a search capability!" brigade.
The full version allows access to all one's videos, [color=green][size=14][b]GREAT[/b][/size][/color];
but not having the ability quickly to search this library blunts this key selling point a bit, [color=red][b]NOT SO GREAT[/b][/color] (IMHO).

I am running the server on Windows 7

1: There's an issue with the server GUI when the desktop screen is set to 120 DPI rather than the more usual 96 DPI. The buttons are too small for the text, and on some windows the text is clipped. This can be adjusted with Control_Panel(Large_Icons)->Display->Set_Custom_Text_Size = 125% and a restart. You should see the problem straight away. Microsoft recommend any constants setting sizes in windows are multiplied by a floating point scaling factor derived via GetDeviceCaps call.

2: I'd love support for still pictures as well, and the possibility to set up a slide show for folders full of picture files, for sequential and random order playback and also the playback of mp3 music files without having to go through iTunes.

We have 3 iPhones and one iPod touch, and two of their users are under 18 years old, so we are restricted what films we can currently share via the server. We could pass protect another server on a different machine but that's more arkward for us.

1. (True Landscape and Portrait capabilities) - Normally when watching a movie you device is in landscape position in a cradle or stand. When you movie is over the screen goes back to portrait mode, can we have the menu system do landscape also?

6. (Multiple conversions at once) - Would be nice to have a feature to allow the process of multiple files at once for conversion, should be a selectable feature for those that have hardware that can support the multi threading.
7. (Scheduler for conversions) - Another nice feature would be to allow the setting of times for the conversion to take place. I have a large group at my house that use this product and it prevents me from doing conversions during peak periods. It would be nice if I could select a file to be converted and then say start at a later time. So in other words a scheduler.
8. (Add Tag words w/search) - Would be nice to able to assign key words to files, and then be able to have a search function to locate those key words.
9. (Serve Music also) - It would also be nice to serve up music, why not make this a true multi media server, would love to have guest enter my home and be able to share movies and music with them. Do not have to have the ability to save the files down but to buffer and play would suffice.

I do not want you to think with all the suggestions I made that I am not pleased with the product, far from the truth! In my house hold we all have iTouch and iPhones, thats some 10 plus folks alone. On Christmas week between family and friends we must have bought 20 licenses during that week alone. Absolutely was the solution to all the different programming needs I had with ages 5 - 60 years of age. So I think your product is fantastic, love that you put the cost on the client side too and not the server, smart move. Now when someone visits I recommend your product. I even direct them to the place in iTunes store. So hats off to you all for a fantastic product! I am however trying to convert all by DVDs and am having to use another product because of the multiple streams capability. Setup your system with the features of the product like Wondershare and your server will be complete. Anyway you have at least one die hard fan, I will be staying with your product for quite some time to come, thank you!

Theoretically a PSP (Android, et. al.) developer could write mobile clients that communicate with Air Video Server.

InMethod might have reasons for wanting to be the exclusive AV client developer (e.g. because the server is freely available), but to me different parties possibly writing multi-platform clients seems more in the spirit of open server/client development than relying on a single party to do it.

unfortunately the subtitles have to be hardcoded in the video stream. Otherwise there are unresolvable sync issues. The only way to move subtitles below video would be to extend video size to match iPhone aspect ratio, but that would make the zoom feature of player unusable.

1) DVD support. I realize that there is unofficial VOB support, but how about providing live conversion of a DVD in the drive? Pop a DVD in your computer's drive then go climb in bed and watch it on your iPod / iPhone.

That being said, there are still a few features that could be added to make it just that much better. Most of these have already been mentioned, but I wanted to cast my vote as well. Here is my top-ten requests in order of importance:

1 - Ability to download converted videos for offline viewing.
2 - Ability to queue all videos in a folder for offline conversion (or at least an indication in the folder view which shows which videos are currently queued, like the "converted" tag)
3 - Remember the last viewed folder when restarting the application.
4 - Multiple server login accounts/passwords.
5 - Buffering progress bar.
6 - Control where converted files are stored (I have a huge video collection and I would rather Air Video *not* store its converted files right next to the original).
7 - Possibility of seeing the list of all offline converted files (this should/could be cached on the server for fast access)
8 - VOB file support (better yet, IFO parsing so that all VOBs can be played and in the correct order)
9 - Adaptive bit-rate based on network performance.

the problem with vob files is that they are often split to multiple files. We can't support that. That's why Air Video doesn't recognize vob files. If your vob file is in one piece and you rename it to mpg it will play. Video encoding is done through the [URL=http://www.videolan.org/developers/x264.html]libx264[/URL] library. The library itself would have to be modified to allow GPU acceleration. I'm not aware of any plans for including GPU acceleration. Also the existing GPU encoders usually cause artifacts in encoded video and the performance is often the same as libx264 software encoding. VOB files may be split to multiple files but can be played individually, so I don't understand your explanation. I do it with Orblive, wmp and nero showtime. Orblive even plays next vob file automatically, so you can watch the entire movie. Obviously, VOB file support is one of the most requested feature, so perhaps, is worth the consideration. Reading through posts here, VOB support would definately make a lot of people happy.

Airvideo is a great software, far better picture quality then Orblive I'm currently using. Unfortunately, most of my files are in ripped dvd format stored in WHS system, one of two reason why I haven't purchased airvideo yet. It would be cool if you could do a conversion and then set it to sync to the iPhone over the air through wi-fi, maybe even a queue, so that if you go off 3g and wi-fi you can still get to some of the movies.

Also allow multiple server streams. For instance I would like to share one stream with my friends and have a private stream for just me and my wife. Passwording folders could make this work but I would rather not even show the video to my friends. Or maybe implement user authentication so I can set ACLs to the directories. Then I could give my friends a user name and password to my public videos and my family videos can stay within the family. Heck, apple my need to pay you, if you add that feature because several people I know would switch to iphones....

As awesome as the subtitles already are in Air Video, I'd like to see support for stylized/video selected font support. A lot of what I stream is anime fansubs, which I've kept around long after buying the DVDs because the subtitles are often more accurate and better placed/styled (also, hundreds of DVDs are a real pain to rip). They tend to use different colored subtitles, multiple fonts dictated by the video file, and/or karaoke effects. I'm not sure exactly what they use to allow it, but PS3 Media Server that I use for streaming to my XBox/PS3 has support for these, and I'd be extremely happy if Air Video would as well.

i just downloaded air video, and i think it's the best app i have on my iphone. it'll be the first app i'll install when my ipad arrives.

just one request, about subtitles. It would be great if in the server we could choose the font color.
White subtitles cannot be read very well if the background of the movie is clear.
if it could be changed in the server options to yellow, orange, green or something like that, it would be perfect.

The context is that I am hoping that this can become the iPhone / iPad SageTV app that doesn't yet exist. To do that, I need to be able to find the show I want to watch easily and then have equivalent player controls. I do encode some of the recordings to be in the right format for the iPod and I convert the edl commercial file into chapter files to be inserted into the video (I can post details of how I do that if you want). But it would be much nicer to use this app to choose an arbitrary video to watch.

So far it looks great and very promising.

Yes, it would be really nice to have that implemented as a default internal server; whenever you're browsing any server, you could check videos that would then transfer to the iPhone in some way (background transfer is probably iffy since it would require Air Video to be running for a long period of time, maybe the app file sharing while docking over USB would be a better option).
I'd love to be able to make a selection of movies to take with me on a long plane trip.

Also, I would love to have sort options (by creation date, by date of last modification, by type...) it would really help navigate large collections.

One is just for Children/Family video for my Grandchildren and the others are for more mature content.

When I first installed the app sometime ago, the system required that the Server PIN be entered every time that app was started.

This was PERFECT for my use and home environment. Why? My grandchildren use my iPhone and iPad and should not have access to R-Rated material on the other servers.

So, could you please have a setting that would force that the PIN be entered at every launch. This would be set at the server.

You should really do some cooperation with home theater enthusiasts around the net for making this app best of bread.

First, My movies. I' ve 5 external disks with 7TB of storage it s real pain for browsing movies in iPad. With integration you can implement some features more easily like; search for movies instead of browsing, ratings, movie info, no need to add lots of directories etc..

Second, DVBLink. It may not be easy to on-the-fly conversion of 7MC Live Tv but you may have some leverage with Dvblogic. dvblogic broadcasts all guide channels with UPNP or their propriety network server/tuner. it might be more easy to encode UPNP streams with ffmpeg. (it may require more CPU power for broadcast channels because of interlaced video but anyway some of us may have enough computing power this)

From looking at some of the forum posts, I can see that some users are asking for plex/xbmc support.
I'm sure you've heard of these media center apps.
Xbmc was the original open source project that turns your xbox into a media center and plex is the mac-specific fork of this project.

Plex is in active development and is currently testing some very advanced features for the next release.
Being open source, it uses open standards for media library organization.
One killer feature is that plex scans the user-input paths on an HDD and pulls in metadata from imdb and tvdb for poster art, synopses, ratings and cast.
This allows plex to present this data in a visually rich, 10 foot tv interface that bests front row.

I have all my media archived in my plex setup and navigating folders thru airvideo works well but is lacking in metadata.
Since plex presents this data as simple XML (with posters and fan art on disk), it is not very complicated to leverage this existing data to present the media more accessibly.
The plex media server is very robust and very extensible.
It would not be too complicated IMHO to get the plex server and the airVideo server to talk.
Why don't you look into it?

A lot of users I personally know want this very badly.

I have about 4TB worth of HD videos in h.264 mkv containers stored on my WHS. They are all stored in one giant share folder. On my client PCs, the way I find and view videos is by arranging the folder by date. This way I can see the most recently downloaded videos and will automatically know which videos I need to watch. This is in my opinion, the only major feature missing in Air Video for iPad. We need to be able to arrange by "Date". Search functionality would be amazing in fact if you can build in a switch to either index or not to index... but without search, the only other way I can see myself using this APP is if filter by DATE is available. I have quite a large video directory structure and it's easy to forget which files I've asked to convert, especially as the AirVideo app doesn't have a centralised list of converted files.

So it would be nice if converted files could be added automatically to iTunes (if required), rather than having to traverse through my directory structure managing individual files as I go...

There's limited file management within iTunes now (the iPhone will get the same thing in 4.0 it looks like). Each app can have their own file storage space for whatever stuff.

Mrklaw - GoodReader can probably do what you want. Syncing might take forever though...if iTunes backs up app storage then it'll be backing up whatever video files too. I've seen search brought up before, and having to index seems to be the issue with it, but how about just using the Spotlight index on Macs? There's another app that does just that ("Searchlight"), I guess the app sends the query to the server app to run the Spotlight search, then returns the results to the app. Could this be done with the AV Server running the query sent by the iPhone/iPad client app then returning a list back to the client?

And some other ones I've been thinking about:
An option to turn off thumbnails. I've noticed the list can get kind of locked up at times in bigger folders, and on a slow disk it takes a while and isn't necessary if I know the files.

Some form of cropping and aspect ratio adjustment would be nice. Like the zoom slider, there could be a crop one that brings in the top and bottom edges (for widescreen stuff with black bars). Then a single select type of control (popover?) for aspect ratio adjustment with the options of no change, 4:3, 16:9. Suggested feature: the ability to open video files that are encapsulated inside RAR archives. Due to fat32 limitations, I have some video files stored in RAR archives that span multiple files. XBMC does this wonderfully by making it completely transparent to the user. I have looked everywhere on the app store for something like Air Video but for photos. There doesn't seem to be anything out there right now that will serve photo folders from your computer to your iphone for simple browsing/viewing purposes. - ability to protect some folders (maybe as simple as putting a .protected file inside the folder, with the password inside) (sure this is not safe for the computer, but we are talking about browsing through airvideo) (was requested, i saw)
- ability to bookmark or store some position in a movie, lets say i watch something, and i need to show somone another movie, i would like to continue where i left off
- are thumbs cached? if yes, where? some cleanup tool would be nice (i like to have controls over my temp files )

is a matter of creating background folder scanning on the pc client and writing it to an xml file with the file and folder location.

The user (client) should not have the ability to add files (take up space) or change the server iTunes if the server owner doesn't want them to.

For example, I would like to purchase this app for my parents as well. However, right now I can't, because they are not very computer literate, but ARE curious. They will for sure start creating files on my server. So no app for my parents.

I think folder search is more than enough to start.
Please build it soon (it would be a killer feature)

But i think it can still be achieved with a simple approach using the existing xml files that we are going to generate per folder and subfolders.
Have the desktop client look through all the xml files. it will be fast enough and you don't have to worry about building a database engine for that search.

Here is a small diagram of how i think it can be done, i'm sure performance wont be an issue.

Actually, for file formats (such as MP4) that support embeded art, Air Video (like most other apps, and even Windows 7), should use the embeded album art instead of pulling a frame capture.

(I guess that's a feature request).

Does Windows have an auto indexing thing like Spotlight on the Mac? It already has the database and can be searched and limited to within folders, doing it from the CLI is simple and returns full paths to the results with this command:

mdfind -name your query -onlyin /folderpath

Currently, when looking for files via iphone, the airvideo app only shows compatible video files. Could you include an "all files" option to view all files in a folder? Sometimes a downloaded file ends up with a weird file extension, even though it is a valid video file.

But I guess, that the required dynamic streaming might work even better with your pre-converted *.m4v files, because they are only 12% the size of the original AVCHD files, and because they would give a standardized interface for your software.

We have to always use live conversion, that's requirement from Apple. You say you want to turn off your computer and then say on when you're in bed. I'm not sure which you are trying to do.

For ON:
Search for Wake-On-LAN on google, and figure out how to enable it on your PC. That will turn it on.

For Off:

Here's my scenario:

My son has an iPod Touch.
I have an iPad.

I've got air video on my file server. The same server has all of my son's ripped cartoons, and all of my ripped TV shows and movies. I can't have my son having access to my content.

I can probably add another install if the server for now (maybe in a VM or something) but it would great to be able to password protect or hide unsuitable content on a single server.

I'd be happy to beta test something too if that would be a help.

I want to be able to set a different choice of accessible folders, depending on who's accessing my server.

I have most of my films for everybody's eyes, but some are too violent or scary for my daughter. And yet, I want to let her watch movies on her iPod. But I would like to be able to let us watch the war or horror movies on our iPad.

I second the request for the option to have embedded cover art for itunes videos. That would be a very nice feature.
I think it would be great to be able to create video playlists in air video. Or at least have an option where it will go to the next song in your iTunes video playlist automatically instead of just stopping.

I love your application, but unfortunately I cannot play all my videos on my hard drive.
With Ripit I copied my whole DVD collection on to my mac.
These files are not supported by AirVideo.
Is there a way to fix that?

Can this PLEASE be implemented, it would be a GREAT addition to the app:

Support your iTunes AUDIO library. I added an itunes playlist (with all of my music), and only one music video showed up. This would be great so that I dont have to use up all of my memory on my iphone or ipad for music. AAC, mp3, etc. Would be willing to pay more for this upgrade. I would love to see a delete movie feature in the iPad app. I sometimes load up movies to watch while traveling, after, just want to delete it to free up space on the remote machine. Would be nice if the request would just drop in the queue, like the convert feature, may not want a large amount of movie deleting going on at one time. Guess, not important to me, a protect option, too, i.e., click it on a movie, and the movie can't be deleted remotely, i.e. the oops factor.

My first quick request would be the ability to organize/rename the list of things you are sharing from the server.

It is a little bit of a pain to have to add them in the order you want them (especially if you forget one) and also the directory names aren't always the best to key off of and can even create duplicates.

you're right. Just take into consideration that VLC supports TXT subtitles
(so maybe it's not a big deal)
if you have a collection of movies with TXT subtitles it makes things very easy

(still I don't know why thay don't have a proper extension, but that's how it is)

I positively need the ability to password protect individual folders. I have children and the Ipad is a family device. I Keep catching the kids viewing age inapropriate content. Is there a reason why this crucial feature cannot be implemented? If you had a donate feature on your site, this feature would get an emediate donation when implemented. (Pls respond to this one)

It seems as if they are being inundated with a bunch of new feature requests. It's been said that the next version is in the works so im sure whatever has been decided to be added is being added. It seems that such features like this are an issue of man power. Generally software projects have various milestones, priorities to be included etc. It may not be in this one or the next. It also seems like there is a man-power issue. I think there are only 2 developers for the software. It would be nice if they used some sorta bug tracking software rather then this form for such issues / requests. Or hired a new developer and raised the price a bit. Make the service subscription based or something. I wrote a post last week or so outlining a plan for AirVid to become AirMedia and include a web client system and a bunch of other stuff. Then why bother compressing them? Transcoding video is one thing, live decompression (both read/write operations) + transcoding is another. I understand it is an option and not everyone would use it... but i fail to see any sort of logic behind managing your files this way never mind expecting software to accompany it.

I would also love to be able to watch my vids remotely on my laptop when I am traveling in China instead of using the iPhone but I realize right now the server is free and only the iphone app is paid. I'd pay for the access on the laptop as well. Is this feature available in any fashion?

If I put the kid friendly stuff in a folder and only share that, then I can't view my content, and I'm stuck watching Nanny McPhee. Also, this makes a mess out of my Media Server environment, for viewing content on the TV via PS3 and Xbox. I use Media Browser, and that supports MPAA ratings so everything is located in a unified folder structure. If I have to implement passwords per folder, then I'd have to go and manually add which folders are accessible.....way to much work!

If the video meta data already includes MPAA ratings, then it would be much easier to assign a PIN number to each kid. Have a usb hdd attached to eee pc installed in vehicle which has a spin down time of 10 secs after inactivity. If there was a prefetch before conversion option the hdd data would xfer to the internal ssd reducing hdd activity / shock damage / power drain.

Would be great for cross country trips / high capacity SSD per gig pricing is going to be crazy for a while. The ipad and ipod touch with airvideo a far superior alternative to any in car dvd / entertainment system I can think of.

Air Video already supports UPnP.

What do you think converts the video to playback on the iPhone? The Nas drive is nowhere near powerfull enough to convert videos yet alone HD videos. That is why you need a pc application.

Most RAR archives of video that you will find don't use any compression. They are RAR'd in 'archive' mode which essentially just means encapsulate in a RAR archive container, with no data compression. This is why XBMC and VLC are able to play direct from RAR archives without any decompression stages.

And I second that request. I have many DVD ISO backups and Bluray's now in spanned RAR archives, due to the 4GB file-size limitation of other file-systems and the ease of transferring large movies to other mediums (like USB sticks, PS3's, iPods HDs, etc). 1. Add a watch folder. In the server preferences you could add a folder to watch so when I add a file to it the server auto adds it to the que and converts the file with NO user intervention
2. Auto add to a defined playlist in iTunes - Have a check box that will automatically add a converted file to the itunes playlist that is selected. The major reason for this is because using the ipad to add it to itunes then I have to sync the ipad to get the file on the ipad. Seems like an extra step that could be done prior to the conversion.
3. Auto delete - If the other 2 options are added an auot remove would be nice because the file would now be in the itunes folder and the server program could remove all other the other versions of the file ( original and the air play that is not in the itunes folder.)

1. Play .mp3 files (most critical feature for me)
2. Ability to do this in the background on iOS4 (pretty important)
3. Ability to play .flac files (quite useful, can live without it)
4. Ability to stream at a lower bitrate than the audio file is encoded at (useful if I try to stream audio across internet, not essential)
5. Ability to handle cover art (not critical, but somewhat useful)
6. Ability to play Vorbis, .wav, .wmv formats (not really critical, but somewhat useful as a nice to have)
7. Ability to play other audio formats (only if you have lots of spare time)

Really? I don't know why... I have my files on a NAS and I just map the drive location in the AirVideo software... what I do is in finder I connect to the NAS usign connect to server, now that the files are available I go to AirVideo and add any new parent folders that I want to make available.

UPnP has nothing whatsoever to do with converting videos. Where did you get your info? UPnP is a discovery protocol for network based devices and services.

Also to my knowledge Air Video is NOT UPnP compatable, so I second the suggestion of the original poster (Jack) and that we also add support for DNLA.

Very very nice program and working perfectly. However, I think it needs to be updated with the ios 4.2 being released.

I purshaed the program and installed it on my iPad 4.2.1. When, I play the movie from my iPad, there is a new button that it can air play the movie to my Apple TV2. When I clicked it it only streams audio and not the video.

Will there be a new version supporting this feature ?!

I would definatley pay a considerable amount more to have all of this I am sure many others would as well. The in-app option would offer choice so users suggesting they would not use certain components would be able to scale into the suite as they see fit.

I would have suggested Air Print as well but I believe someone else beat you to it!

I have only one request. To be able to move the subtitle to the bottem of the screen.
Today it only supports subtitle in the movie. May be you could move it so it is always at the bottem of the screen.

It would be great if Air Video could use GPU hardware supported encoding on the server, for live conversion.
Especially now when ipads requires so much of the server when live converting 720P .mkvs to iPad native resolution.

I heard about some libx264 which can use OpenCL / or Cuda or any GPU support for conversion, for example DGIndexNV is good.
I understand that its 3d party software, but you may create an interface in airvideo server so it will use 3d party software for converting (so the users which wants to use the DGIndexNV, have to buy it, you just only allows the use of it) I am willing to betatest any such feature. I use this to keep track of which episodes I have watched in a show, as I jump between alot of shows.

When I view a directory list of files via Air Video it does not reflect the colour attribute of the files, leaving me to guess which episode I'm upto.

This is my only frustration in an otherwise awesome bit of software.

Could you please add the functionality to display this file attribute? Maybe even allow me to set this attribute via Air Play so that whether I watch an ep on my MAC or on the ipad I can always update the files I've watched.

There aren't any good photo browsing iOS apps. The only ones out there are SLOW. Probably because they're transferring the entire photo to the iOS device. Air Video needs to take this over since it obviously has compression handled.

Cover Art for Air Video.

I use sapphire on a Mac Mini but also access my Video Library with my iPad
Could you not import the xml form the user library or at least access the JPG
folder with the cover art that has been conveniently change to the same name.

I also have another feature that I would not like to post publicly as its commercial
potential maybe something larger competitors will be interested in.

Right now, I can't even watch videos from iTunes playlists.

I Have +1 for this request. I don't have a computer at home, so I'm watching all movies from my mac at work, on my iPad.
I'm using labeling for sorting the content I have. (green = OK, blue = watch again, grey = DELETE, red = must have, etc.)
If air video had a color box next to the items, or maybe the line would be highlighted it would help a lot + i wish i could set it from the device. So in the morning when I get into the office, I could search for grey labeled items, and simply move to trash.

deleting any video not just air video converted ones would do nearly the same to me.
