Air Video Server 2.4.5-beta7 released

I'm pleased to announce that new Air Video Server version is available.

You can download it for [b][URL=https://s3.amazonaws.com/AirVideo/Air+Video+Server+2.4.5-beta7u1.dmg]Mac OS X[/url][/b] and [b][URL=https://s3.amazonaws.com/AirVideo/Setup245beta7.exe]Microsoft Windows[/url][/b].

This is maintenance release that includes various bug fixes. It also resolves issues with offline conversion video quality being too low and the conversion leaving temporary files around. Beta 7 contains updated FFmpeg build.

Note that the Mac OS X version requires a 64bit CPU so it will not run on first generation Intel based Macs (with Core Duo). Due to user demand the next version will work on 32bit Intel CPUs again.

I have installed Beta 5 right now working well. I updated to Beta 7, and everytime I play a video, I get a lot of pauses in the video stream.

I am posting two logfiles. One beta 7 with a live conversion that does not work correctly, and one where it works perfectly with beta 5

It is the same computer (i5-650, 3 Gig RAM, files stored on windows server 2003) I merely installed the new beta over the old one. I even rebooted the computer inbetween removing the old one before installing the new one to see if that would help. It did not.

It seems to have problems with parts that have a lot of motion (camera pans for example)

Here is the conversion log for a conversion where I get pauses in the video.

Both logs show that video is being transcoded fast enough, the problem is most likely somewhere else. Given your description I'd suspect network throughput is not enough. Beta 7 does have slightly increased bitrate. If you change nitrate to 2560 in Air Video global settings do you still get buffering?

I have gigabit connections between my server, and the server I am running Airvideo on. It is a 100 mbps connection to the access point. I get a download speed of 14 mbps connection across my wifi (I am about 5 feet from the access point with the iPad).

I changed the bandwidth setting in the player, and the same thing happens when I try the slower bandwidth.

This is the same issue with the files ripped using Magic DVD ripper as beta 6. That is why I am still on Beta 5.

I do not get buffering, I get places where the video just freezes. The audio continues. and then the video jumps to the new frame.

I was using beta-6 without any issues at all. However, as soon as I upgraded to beta-7, air video's time bar started to get stuck while playing a video. The movie keeps playing fine, but the progress bar stops at some point, so whenever I pause and resume my movie, it goes back where it stopped. Any ideas? Btw. I also upgraded the java on my computer; don't know if it could cause this...

My limited experience with beta7 has been problem-free but I note the following changes that might interst others with offline conversions.

I installed the beta7 (with new FFmpeg) and saw that the 0-100 quality scale was unchanged although actual qualities available now vary greatly. Previously, I just left the quality setting at 100 for all my conversions. By experiment I think I have found that for HD TV recordings I need to set the beta7 scale to 30 or so to get a bit rate equivalent to the beta6 100 setting. For SD, however, I seem to need a higher setting, 40 to 60, to get the conversion quality I got with beta6 at 100. Also, it appears the beta7 adjusts the audio bit rate. I don't know if previous versions adjusted the audio rate depending on the quality setting because I always transcoded at 100 but my beta7 audio bit rates vary from 64Kbps to 160Kbps.

I tested a five minute HD clip and found a 30 gave me a 1280x720 1200Kbps recording while a 100 setting gave me a 6100Kbps recording with, of course, a five-times bigger file 40% the size of the original 1920x1080 MPEG2 clip. For me, 100 is overkill but I expect it will at least partly satisfy the quality-fans.

Well, Air Video should aim for constant quality during offline conversion, not constant bitrate. Beta 6 quantization factors were off, but it is possible that beta 7 needs tweaking as well. Audio bitrate has always changed with quality.

Just tried out this latest beta release, having been using the stable version. All experiences positive except that some videos refuse to "play with live conversion". The client looks as if it will play but eventually drops back to stopped mode. No errors displayed on client.

The server shows the following live conversion failure, which I assume causes playback to abort:

I worked with beta 6 (always the latest subversion) since long, and I had carefully evaluated, which conversion settings were most adequate for my usage with a MacMini under Lion and an iPad 2 with IOS 5.01. I had settled with the parameters:
- max width 1024 px
- max height 720 px
- quality for offline conversion 80%

Today I converted offline a TV broadcast of the following characteristics (according to what the latest VLC tells me):
- SD PAL, 45 min, 550MB mp4 file, 852x480 25 fps MPEG-4 AVC (Part 10), MPEG AAC (mp4a) 48000 Hz

With the above mentioned parameter settings, beta 6 made the following file from it:
- 45 min, 379MB m4v file, 864x480 25 fps VC Coding, 1.14 MBit/s, 48000 Hz

With the same parameter settings, beta 7 made the following file from it:
- 45 min, 789MB m4v file, 864x480 25 fps VC Coding, 2.37 MBit/s, 48000 Hz

I have to say, that I found it a bit careless on the side of InMethod, that the software now generates a twofold file size (at first glance I even cannot recognize a significant quality difference), thus rendering user adjustments made with beta 6 totally irrelevant.

For the moment, I've gone back to beta 6.

It is possible that you can't see any difference because of the quality of original file. If you had higher quality original file the difference would be visible. We did have changed the quantization values, to get the same bitrate you will need to lower the quality setting. We did get lot of complains that the quality was too low on highest settings in beta6, that is why.

But I still have doubts, whether your balance of characteristics with beta 7 is how it could/should be in beta 8

Hi there it's been a while

Using this version (I can't speak for previous recent betas), itunes will not sync offline converted video to my ipod 2nd gen stating it is not a supported video format.

Of course I could use handbrake but my main reason for still using Air Video is for the ability to delegate amongst multiple systems using a shared back end. Remotely adding video to playlists is my favourite feature!

I'm currently trying various quality settings and video dimensions/resolutions but so far no joy. The built in itunes converter works but there's no way I'm using that more than once

Is this something I've done or am doing or should I wait for an update? Or should I be using *shudder* stable?

Oddly enough it does, I should have mentioned that.

I've just reverted to stable and it's working fine on the defaults. For some reason the beta is producing transcodes that at this point only itunes rejects for a 2nd gen. I've got a 3rd gen and an iphone 4 but I'm out of the state and currently only have the one system to test with.

Will be home in 6 days. Add a day for getting in the time to install the latest beta on each of the relevant PCs. Actually, I'd imagine just the 3rd gen would suffice as the iphone 4 is technically more capable?

With all respect (I love Air Video!), really? There is a huge number of folks out there running 32-bit OS. As for myself, my main PC is 64-bit, but I run Air Video off of my WHSv1 server, which of course is 32-bit only.

Per the Steam survey, >30% of Windows PCs are still 32-bit OS.

this is not about 32 bit Windows, we'll likely have to support 32 windows for a long time. This is only about Macs with 32bit intel CPUs - the first generation of intel based Macs (Core Due).

I got the file, it looks Air Video Server has problem decoding certain mpeg2 telecine video streams, hopefully I'll be able to fix this in next server update.

Just as an FYI, Beta 5 has no issues with the video file supplied. So it was something that changed between Beta 5 and Beta 6.

I am currently using Beta 5 without issues.

In fact I was on a Southwest Airlines flight last week from FL to MA, and using the in-flight WiFi, I watched over 2 hours of video from my house. Very cool!

In fact the in-flight WiFi worked better than some hotel WiFi's that I have used!

I have latest version installed on iphone 3g, iphone 4, on PC win7, quad core.
Only .avi is working, .ts , .mpg, .wmv, .mp4v not working with live transcoding or with Play button( after i converting videos on hdd and play them on iphone).

Im new here and am having problems with my video's converting on my iphone but cant get them to sync and show up in iTunes and then the airvideo log says empty but i have like 10 movies converted on my phone. Can someone help me?? Im sure im posting this in the wrong place but cant figure out how to post??

some of them are .ts from my dvbc tuner, recorded with progdvb, dvbviewer.
others are from net, mkv demo.

I also prefer a 32 bit version as I use my old mini to do the conversions.
Also is there any overview on the exact features in the latest beta. for example does it include the improved logging capabilities that were mentioned earlier or will this still be a while out.

I'm very confident the problem lies in the last line there, since disabling audio allows it to convert. My player is an iPhone 4S, and if I set it to just play without conversion, it runs.
The tested file is M4V, but the problem occurs on MKV as well, and since that's what my muxing tool spits out:

Hello All,

I've been having problems playing Air Video through AirPlay. When I use Air Video and try to stream the movie to ATV, it only shows a speaker next to the "Apple TV" button. When I click to stream to ATV, only sound comes through the ATV, and no video.

Are there any fixes for this?

Here is what I'm using:

Mobile:
iPhone 4 running iOS 4.2.10

TV:
Apple TV 2 running 4.4.3

Server:
Mac Pro running OSX 10.7.2
MacBook Pro Running 10.7.2

I have asrock vision 3d with i3 processor (2.4ghz)

everything is working (except 5120kbits/s setting which is stuttering, measured on 1080p)

may I ask for 2 options ?

add bitrate between 2560 and 5120 (if possible add 3072 and 4096) so I can compare and test i3 power for different bitrates.

add options to choose colors for subtitles in airvideo server.

interface - could be bottom interface one row only ? (add forward/rewind (30secs and zoom) to row with play/ pause volume ?

Oh... what a moron! I upgraded to a newer firmware and voilá... works flawlessly... this just became my favorite app of all time (which for a hardcore mac fan is a lot to say!)

I tried the beta7 release and all I get is a spinning ball...same as the prior beta version. The version that seems to run fine for me is still beta5...

don't know what the issue is...how do I resolve this

Sorry rmasse10, I had not made myself clear.

The update suggestion was supposed to be made to Air Video admins/devs. Although this new avconv app has the same ffmpeg binary name, Air Video uses some no longer supported parameters, which makes this change not a plain simple one.

Unfortunately, I have no help for your issue. Hope you find your fix soon.

The performance depends on the libavcodec library, which his up to date regardless of ffmpeg/avconv.

Also problems with offline conversion here.

With beta6 converted videos, the converted videos stream fine.

I stream them remotely (WiFi) to my iPhone and send it from there via Airplay to the Apple TV 2.

With beta 7 converted videos, they hardly stream to the iPhone (frequent buffering), but they never stream to the Apple TV. Means I can see Apple TV start buffering, and buffering... for a couple of minutes, and then crash. Happens every time, with different movies.

So I went back to beta 6, convert again with beta 6 and all is good again.

I understand that there have been quality improvements made in beta7 for offline conversion. However, the resulting converted file is about 4 times as big as with beta6, so therefore also the bitrate must be dramatically higher. While this explains somehow the problem with stuttering/buffering when remote streaming to the iPhone, it does not explain the endless buffering on the Apple TV.

Maybe somebody could advise how conversion settings have to be adjusted in beta7 so that it behaves like beta6 (I have set quality conversion settings all to the max.and bitrate to 2048kbit/s for remote Wifi).

In beta6, I use max resolution (1280x720), Quality 100% and this works fine.

I used the same setting in beta7, and the resulting file is about 4 times as big.

The source is a Blue ray rip.

Hence my question, what is the equivalent quality setting in beta7 to get the beta6 maximum quality setting result for the offline conversion?
The resolution must stay 720p (as mentioned, I stream to an Apple TV). So it remains the quality setting. Is 100% in beta6 50% in beta7? Any hint?

The quality range has changed. So you need to lower the quality in beta7. It's hard to say what setting exactly would be the same quality, you can try 60%.

You have a 32bit only CPU on a MAC? Because the this isn't about running on X86 (32 bit) [i]OS[/i]. I have it running (as do many others) just fine on Win7 32 bit. It happens to be a virtualized system, but 32bit OS just the same.

Touche; thought there were some 4MB cache Core Duos. I shouldn't have let the frustration of seeing the same questions get the better of me.

Love this version however. It does a better job of playing WTV than many MS-only software transcoders do.

So far so good. Using Mac mini mid 2010 with 8gb RAM.

Althought I miss to be able to delete, move and change names for the media files within the iOS app, so I wouldn't need to use other app to organise the media library...
Also some audio is really quiet, problem from the main file, not the air video. "¿COuld be possible to add the option for normalise the audio or some audio boost for the online playing?

I've been having issues with beta 5-7 doing some weird things. Whats happening is the video will play for a random amount of time, then it will stop and display 'loading' on the iPad, then play again for a few minutes and eventually timeout completely. This behavior started randomly after weeks of flawless performance. I can't seem to pin it down to anything network related specifically. The server is a core 2 quad q8200 with 6gb of ddr3 memory, so I can't imagine its lacking power. The OS is Windows Server 2008 R2, so again I don't think there are any specific issues with that either. Anyway, the log file is here:

Pizoisoned, you are using Windows 2008 r2 and that one is known for using only one core from the encoder at the time being.
That could cause your buffering and the timeout (one core is not enought) issues.
This happens only with some codecs.
How many cores is been used when you do the live playing?
If you got one core at 100% you know what the problem is...

I've been noticing a certain level of audio distortion with beta 7 that wasn't present in earlier betas. The noise artifacts are most noticeable during quiet, near-silent moments of a video. Possibly a bug related to the updated ffmpeg build used in this beta?

(Server is running on a Core 2 Duo MBP, OS X 10.6.

Hi there

On Beta 6 I noticed that if the client was set to play the next video and that video had been previously played and quit (so if you were to play it directly it would ask if you wanted to resume at position XXX), when the next video is auto played it appears to have issues causing the next video to fail to play. I'll see how beta 7 does and if this is a server or client issue.

Hi,
I have set the server up on two PC's
1. Media Centre running Win7 x64
2. Windows Home Server

On 1 it is run as an application started on login and, using task scheduler on resume (closes down any running instance and starts a new instance).
On 2 it is installed as a server using srvany.exe.

Streams brilliantly to iPad/iPhones.

Unfortunately on 1 is crashes occasionally bringing up a BSOD. Mostly happens when PC finishes a recording and tries to sleep, not everyday. I can't see anything consistent in the logs to explain this.

Update 4/03/2012
With further testing I have eliminated AirVideo as the cause, although my observation above was accurate. Reinstalled and now its working perfectly.

Air Video can't really directly cause BSOD, it doesn't do anything low level, doesn't install custom drivers, etc. If the BSOD happens during conversion it would mean that the computer can't sustain high CPU load for some reason.

Seriously? Like millions! 5 out of my 7 PC's are 64 bit chips but only 2 are running 64 bit windows. I am sure a lot of people are 32 bit only.

This only applies for macs with 32bit CPU - the very first generation of intel based macs (core duo). It doesn't apply to any windows computers.

Please use something like https://github.com/niltsh/UniversalDetector and detect charset for subtitles automatically.

As you know, subtitles often came from several different sources and they don't really agree upon a unique charset, so we must change it all the time in the server in order to have proper subtitles, specially in languages with lots of accentuation like Portuguese (BR).

I think that with a charset detection lib you can get rid of the charset setting and try to guess it automatically. It would be awesome!

That means decoding 1080p and encoding 720p. encoding 1080p is a completely different beast. We'll address this though.

I just downloaded the beta server for a 64bit Windows 7 home laptop and tried it out with the free version of the app; it had two problems doing live conversions from captured over-the-air transport streams:

1) (the more serious one) audio is out of sync with the video; since most of what I was watching was talking (or singing, e.g. live opera), this made it unwatchable. I uninstalled the beta and installed the normal server, and it doesn't have this problem.
2) frequently trying to skip ahead or change position would hang indefinitely. The log showed no errors at those times (unless the long string of hex digits is some sort of error, but I'm pretty sure there wasn't any correspondence between those and the times that the hangs happened); there were usually some ffmpeg processes running, but they seemed to be idle (at least as reported by the resource monitor). The hangs seemed to be tied to specific files, i.e. I could switch to another file, play that for a while successfully, and then attempt to switch back to the one that was hanging and it would again hang.

Is there any additional tracing that can be turned out that might give a clue what's going wrong?

I second this request. In fact I'm more interested in the queue encode function for 1080p files to be made ready for later syncing via iTunes. Your interface for selecting audio & subtitle tracks from the iPad itself is just superb. Live conversion is also something I'd want to use as well (12 core Opteron server). I'm literally going to scout my nearby shops for an Apple TV v3 today.

Beta 7 used to work fine for me, but not anymore...

Due to requirements of other programs, I have recently shifted from Java 1.6 32bit to 1.6 64bit on my Windows 7 pc. I have doublechecked and the new Java installation works otherwise fine.

When I start beta 7, I will no longer reckognize that I have Java installed. Instead it sends me to java.com to install Java again (I assume the 32bit version). I assume that I can only have one version of Java installed at a time, so...?!

It needs 32bit JRE. There is no reason why 32bit JRE couldn't be installed alongside 64bit JRE.

Ok, thanks for the reply.

With that in mind I went along and re-installed Java 1.6 32bit on my PC again, and the two Java installations seem to work fine together as you said. And Air Video Server now works again!

Is it difficult to make Air Video Server use the 64bit Java (if this is the only version available on a PC)? It seems a bit silly having to install Java twice... Also, one would think that a program running on Java could utilize the extra "muscles" in the 64 bit version, if available?

Just wondering when the next update will be considering a lot of discussion has been noted in the last 3 months when 2.4.5-beta7 was released but nothing has been applied yet. Second there I also would like to see 1080p live conversion since i have the ability i believe to do so (6 core i7 cpu with 12gb ram) to proccess it). Even if it doesn't work right away this is a beta testing forum so we would drop logs and tweak it just right for regular usage. It just seems that development has stalled but the forum talk has continued. Great Product btw but for us in the beta section at least please keep us informed of what is happening (or if nothing is happening).

I would already be happy if there would be support for 1080p offline conversion... of course even better with live conversion, but I can imagine that this requires a lot of CPU performance.

Hi, the development is definitely not stalled, there are many new things coming, but the update will not be just incremental so it will take a while.

Hi,

AirVideo is working fine with most files I have...still I have one major problem which is: Dreambox .ts files from recordings. I know I can "clean" the files with tsmuxer etc. but it would really be helpful if Airvideo would convert those files without the need to do this. Is there any chance that we will get full support for dreambox files with Airvideo? It is such a great program and would make it perfect for me with this feature included!

Is there a way to change the audio conversion settings? I have several mkv files that are 5.1 and I can only convert them to 2 channel stereo.

Given that iPhone and iPad doesn't support 5.1 sound Air Video currently only encodes to stereo.

True, but Air Video gives you the option of queuing files to be converted. This avoids me having to use my iPhone/iPad as a go-between. Therefore I simply add all the movies I want to convert to the queue and then play them directly on my Apple TV using iTunes. When using Air Video this way, the multi-channel limitations of the iPhone/iPad become a non-issue.

air video isn't really intended to be just a batch video converter for atv though

you could accomplish what you're looking for with handbrake, or SUPER, or a dozen other apps that would match your requirements a little bit better

I am using Air Video Server 2.4.5b7 on a Core2 Duo Mac Mini bootcamped with 32-bit Windows 7 Home Premium. My video/movie files are hosted on a WD My Book Live Duo NAS wired via CAT5 to my router. I usually use Handbrake to rip the movie and MetaX to update the metadata in the files before moving them to the NAS.

Here goes... I am having problems with random "invalid" status on a few files using Air Video Client on iPhone and iPad. I've tried renaming the video file, moving them to a different folder, and even deleting the thumbnail cache files to no avail.

The files with the "invalid" status play just fine on my Boxee Box, the Boxee app on the same iPad, in VLC and Windows Media Player (on Windows 7), and VLC (on Mac OSX). Although, QuickTime Player (on Mac OSX) fails to play the file with "An invalid sample description was found in the movie." message.

I can't figure this out for the life of me... I've reripped the movie several times using the same settings as I use for other files that are working without issue and it doesn't make any difference.

Help!

There seems to be something really wrong with the file (or for some reason the process can't read the file at all). Can you check permissions? Is the file really MP4 (not some other format with renamed extension)?

the file plays fine in everything (boxee box, windows media, vlc, etc.) except air video client and quicktime...

from the logs it seems ffmpeg is having trouble with the file (maybe the header). since it works in everything else, maybe ffmpeg requires something the others don't!

the files must have video and audio since they play fine in everything else... the air video client (and quicktime) must be looking for something that the other players don't or consider something as bad that the others don't. quicktime says the problem is the short description but i don't understand how check or correct that.

ps: unless you think 600+ mb is reasonably sized, i don't have any to provid since they are all handbrake rips of movies in my library.

yes, the files work fine in everything except quicktime and air video client.

i'm out of town this weekend and won't be home until tuesday 4/24. i can post the file then.

how do you suggest i extract out just the beginning part of the file?

On mac you can enter the following command in Terminal (Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal)

head -c 4096 > ~/Desktop/file.out

i.e.

head -c 4096 ~/Desktop/mymovie.mp4 > ~/Desktop/file.out

if you place the original file to Desktop and iti s named mymovie.mp4

It should create a new file called file.out on your Desktop.

Both headers are from files that are marked "invalid" by the Air Video client.

beetlejuice.out is from a file that WILL play in QuickTime
brainstorm.out is from a file that WILL NOT play in QuickTime

I have many more samples if needed (out of 300 or so there are around 20 AV invalids and maybe 60 that won't play in QT)

Where is the file from? It seems like it is unfinished - the mdat atom doesn't have size set. This can happen when the muxer is interrupted before it writes the mdat atom size, which is usually the last muxing step.

these and practically all the files are from handbrake using any dvd hd. handbrake shows no errors.

i've ripped the beetlejuice file many times with the same result and the others at least twice and continue to get the same result.

PS: i have dvdfab blu-ray ripper but rarely use it. i don't have their dvd ripper.

I've never seen handbrake generating a file without mdat atom size set. If it is indeed doing this it is a bug as such file is invalid (that's why quicktime can't open it either). VLC seems to have a workaround for broken files.

Hmmm... That's wierd... Everything else, not just VLC, can play them. The apps included in that list (that i've tested) that can play them are Boxee app on iPad, Boxee Box, StreamToMe on iPhone and iPad (your direct competitor), VLC on Windows and Mac, Windows Media Player, and XBMC on Windows. QuickTime can even play some of them that Air Video client marks as invalid. It seems to me that Air Video client is the most restrictive and the odd one out not the other way around as you imply.

Is there any tool or way to validate/change/update the headers without going through the ripping process again?

perhaps if you could send me header from a file that QuickTime can play that Air Video can't I could look at that too, as that would be likely a different issue. The file you've sent me is clearly invalid. It is possible that some other players can handle it (because they have workaround for this specific atom size missing), but workarounds such as this lead to creating invalid files without people noticing, so I'm not very keen on doing this. I'm sure there are tools that can remux the file without transcoding. I'm not sure though why other tools based on ffmpeg would handle the file (unless the demuxer has changed in the meanwhile).

Since all the other players that I've listed can play the affected files without problems, it seems that the file not having the MDAT ATOM size isn't critical to the playing process. I would think it would be smarter for AirVideo to, at a minimum, at least follow the competition and play the file and maybe just add a notification to the user that the MDAT ATOM size is not valid.

PS: StreamToMe (direct competitor to Air Video) plays the Air Video "INVALID" files fine and even reports the movie size in bytes and time.

Just discovered this app yesterday after I bought my new Ipad (3rd Gen.) and I must say it is really amazing. What I like most about your app is the clean, minimalistic design of the GUI and it´s ease of use. It only displays what is needed and it isn´t overloaded. Also, stability is great, didn´t have a single app crash, yet.

I´ve compared the live conversion functionality of 2.4.3 and 2.4.5 beta7 and the later has greatly improved image quality at max. settings (1280x720 and 5120kbit/sec). Videos and movies are almost indistinguishable from the original files at these settings on the retina display. While 2.4.3 still had some compression artifacts at these settings, everything just looks stunning with 2.4.5. I have played like 150 different files with various container formats and codecs and I have not seen one file that Air Video couldn´t play, almost too good to be true.

I also love how smart Air Video is when it detects a compatible MP4 container (AVC/H.264, AAC) and you can just hit Play and can start streaming right away. This way, you get the best possible quality with Air Video on the Ipad.

However, I still found some things that should be easy to fix (bugs):

1) If you play back any files with a resolution of 1440x1080 (ex. from HDV cameras), the aspect ratio is wrong. They are currently displayed with a 4:3 aspect ratio, while they need to be displayed at 1920x1080 (16:9). (Or rather 1280x720, which is also 16:9)

2) If you want to play back files in a M2TS container, in the preview window all you get is pixel garbage at first, this happens when you tab on an M2TS file (left pane) to preview and also if you press "Done" in the upper left corner while playback. I also had this with some WMV files.

Other than that, keep up the great work and if I find other bugs to report I will post them here.

So, I purchased DVDFab DVD Ripper and re-ripped one of the files using that instead of Handbrake. The new file is no longer listed as "invalid" and plays just fine with AirVideo client. But I stand by my earlier comments that AirVideo has problems playing files that other players can play.

It fails to read the file header that is why it says "No Video Stream" found in file. This is not a small irregularity. The atom size is important. In some cases with some files the size of mdat atom can be computed from file size, but with certain files this will not be computed correctly. It is hacky at very least. I can't believe handbrake would even generate such files unless something got wrong during the transcoding and it didn't finish the muxing process.

Thanks for your assistance! As a work around, I'm using another ripper on these few DVD's since it appears Handbrake can't rip them properly.

In any case, I still think the fact that everything else can play the files indicates that the missing information is not critical. Also, the error message displayed by AirVideo is incorrect and should read "Header malformed" or something to that extent - instead of "No Video Stream found in file" that is displayed now.

After installing this beta AirVideo starts to ignore aspect ratio written in mkv file header. i.e. 720x480 or 720x576 with AR 4:3 should look as if they were 720x540 (or 640x480, 768x576, doesn't matter), but they are played as is - shrinked or stretched.

Strange, but after reverting to 2.4.3 nothing has changed. Or maybe I was wrong and that behaviour was all the time, and I just didn't notice it before.

the only problem i have noticed in my typical use is that when you select audio only as a conversion setting it trys to start playing and then cancels (and if you select the option to play next file automatically keeps skipping through all the videos you have). this is not an issue with 2.4.3.

BTW - I was able to solve my problems with files being marked "invalid" by AirVideo by either

1. re-ripping the movies using handbrake without selecting the closed caption subtitle or
2. removing all the text streams except appletext and mp4s using MP4Box and AtomicParsley
