I don't in any case want a second server running to send videos to my other pc's - since even if the other server were efficient it still uses up a second lot of resources! I just want to be able to run the Air Video server and watch the videos wherever I need to.

What you guys and myself are so impressed about how Air Video works may well placed too much credit to inmethod, but unknowingly though most of the credit is probably due to Apple Inc.

Most of of what you guys see on the client side is probably helped by the hardware acceleration that is inherent in all iPad, iPhone and iTouch products that helps HTTP streaming. I have EyeTV Elgato with turbo.264HD and streaming to the phone is simply amazing with 3G. Try that with a netbook, however, and it does not always work so well. There is a reason why Apple did not adopt Adobe flash and this is one of them. Their implementation is less resource dependent and it's great. If it depends on hardware acceleration as noted by Elgato for the iPhone or iPad, where is that hardware acceleration coming from your slow computer. There is a reason why Nvidia made the Nvidia Ion processor for HD viewing for PC netbooks as an option or the new Intel Core i series.

I have a dedicated PC streaming server myself running TVersity and Twonky Media and can serve rather well to any PC or Mac client using Adobe flash via a web browser. TVersity does live conversion like Air Video plus aggregate TV channels from Hulu and Netflix and if it weren't for my iPhone not being able to do Adobe flash, I would probably never consider Air Video at all. TVersity does music and photo serving as well. On a multimedia platform, every media server has strong and weak points. The strong point with Air Video is the fact that it does video streaming so well on the iPhone or iPad and there is nothing even remotely close to it, except Elgato EyeTV. After seeing all the excitement over AirVideo I came to their site specifically to see if it could be used to stream to a Mac or PC and was disappointed to see it could not. So firstly +1 from me as well.

Like HotStuff2 says, the obvious solution is to use HTML5 and a webclient. Regarding charging, I had thought charging was going to be solely by charging for the server software not for the client. If they had made the client free but the server not, then this problem would have been avoided. I would much rather this remain a small scale solution targeted towards mobile devices, that slowly builds momentum until it would be much harder to "shut down" if it comes to that.

Look no further than the example of the Hulu folks believing that boxee is inherently different than any other browser software, just because it works with a remote control and has TV out.

1. You are on the road and want to access your movies from home. Try running your 1080p movies over a hotel or mobile broadband connection.
2. You are running a lower powered Windows based PC that can't natively handle your 1080p movie playback.
3. Your network can't handle the streaming of that 35gb ripped blu-ray.
4. You want to build a super low cost extender for movie playback in other rooms.
5. The list goes on...

I dunno, these points are pretty weak and seem to focus on 3G streaming, which is fraught with technical networking issues that have little to do with the client and server. And if you're focusing on 3G streaming, you've just reduced the prospective customer base significantly. And I'm just some guy posting in a forum. If you've failed to convince me, it's pretty unlikely you're going to convince a project manager at InMethod in developing a client that end up competing with countless free solutions that do essentially the same thing.

You can say I'm wrong, but what will ultimately determine "who's wrong" is whether or not InMethod releases an Air Video client for Windows or Mac, which is a simple risk/reward consideration. There's so much more to consider beyond whether it "could" be done.

Considering they'd be competing with dozens of completely FREE solutions that can do so much more, the risk seems pretty high. It seems highly unlikely they'd dedicate the resources for such a small subset of the market vs. the millions of iPhone/iPad users willing to drop a few bucks in the App Store.

I think it's far more likely they'll improve the product they've already finished. I would like to see .VOB and .ISO support long before I'd vote for a Win/Mac client.

Imagine that tagline in the App Store: [b]Watch DVDs on iPad![/b]

There are many others that share this opinion if you read beyond this thread.

I came straight here after buying the ipad app and installing the server. This is an awesome application - Thanks!

I think there's an opportunity here - even after reading some posts that suggest there are free ways to do this, I think many people who purchase the app would be happy to find that you also sell a desktop client and look no further.

I would be happy to pay a fair price for a polished solution that looks and acts like what they are already familiar with. I'd also be comforted in knowing that ongoing development of the project is paid and not happening at a snails pace.

In sum, if you make a desktop client, I'd buy it too. I'd also be happy to beta test it when you're ready.

However - we need to quit asking for the Mac/Windows port of this, and work on it ourselves. It is true your AirVideo servers will respond on the right port via HTTP. We need to work out how the iClients are getting the stream started. It could be something simple of getting VLC or Native QuickTime X to run it.

I'm game to work with some more experienced folks. I'll give up some server space etc for testing. Just let me know.

With that said, I half justify it to myself because I'm not aware of any alternative product - open source or not - that is directly able to do what we all want... ie act as a server that can run all the time at home, allow us all to access our own content, but also transcode into whatever bitrate we want etc to allow those of us that travel a lot to watch what we want without having to copy it over first. I mean, on the iphone is one thing, but to be able to do that on my laptop would be a perfect result. I had a look at orb which is nearly there, but I don't like the idea of having to register with them and run everything through their servers. I would much rather have a server and client that are all running locally.

The only thing that makes me think we won't have much luck with this is the following. If I run a stream on the iphone, and then do a ps ax on the mac that's serving up, grep for ffmpeg, and I see the following:

The interesting things to me are that --conversion-id isn't a standard ffmpeg option, and neither is --port-number. The other interesting thing to me is that it says it's streaming out on port 46631 - and a port scan shows that the mac is open on both 45631 and 46631. But, I only have to map 45631 at the router...

The other thing from the command line is that I don't know what protocol it's using to stream (udp/rtp etc).

I also know that I can't just point VLC at my IP on port 45631 or 46631 - it errors immediately - can't get the stream.

Also - if you point a web browser at http://macmini(or whatever):45631 - it serves up a simple text file saying "Air Video"... maybe there's something in there that the media player only in the iphone can control?

Anyone else out there more experienced than me in the world of ffmpeg (I don't really know much about it) care to have a try?

2) if you start a stream and look at the packets themselves, the iphone is asking for the file more or less as follows:

that gumph after the segment_ corresponds to the conversion id that you see in the command line options for ffmpeg...

But for now... a quick guide for someone who wants to watch their material on their macbook... it's not exactly easy, but hey...

1) log in and start the film on your iphone that you want to watch... (you can come out of the app as soon as it's started)
2) open terminal on the os X server (if you're at a hotel away from home - you'll need to forward port 22 to your mac so you can ssh in) - type "ps ax | grep ffmpeg"
3) look for the part that says --conversion-id=BLABLABLABLA
4) open quicktime X on your macbook and go to the following URL:

http://[PUBLIC IP OF YOUR SERVER]:45631/live-playback-2.2.1/index_[CONVERSION-ID-goes-here].m3u8

Hey presto!

NB, as soon as you start another stream on your iphone, it'll generate a new conversion-id and you'll have to start the process again to make it work properly.

I am not sure what the legal/practical/implementation roadblocks there are to a desktop app. You guys may not have the resources in house to put this together quickly, and I can understand that. The backend server you guys have developed is fantastic, however. I know the user would need to run an webserver for this to work, but that isn't such a big deal is it? Maybe roll it up in a jar, like the airvideo server and include the web server.

Not to look a gift horse in the mouth, but a fully portable solution would be great. Also can someone point me to the airvideo api so I can look into building this webapp myself.

Some of us don't only use Airvideo over a lan. Some of use watch stuff over the internet and it would be really nice to have an option to use the live conversion and sexy interface from a notebook, while on the road, or even to access friend's computers and watch the videos they have.

I personally access my office computer from home, as it has much faster internet access than my home connection and way more drive space. So all my media lives at the office and is accessed remotely. I've mostly been using jphastings code as a guide about my own implementation, rather than a direct port of his ruby code, which gave me the small insights below. I doubt I am the first one to have come to these conclusions, but thought it might help for anyone else looking to pick-up the jphastings code for their own air-video related project.

The "unknown" numbers that jphastings AVMap function grabs are the index of each object. (objects are treated differently to value-types. valuetypes (ints, longs, doubles, pointers) aren't objects per-se and thus don't get an index.
the "R" data-type is a pointer.

So you can have a field on a media-info that says:
language s(4)(5)hello
that means language field has a string, which is object with index 4, 5 bytes long, and then the 5 bytes for hello.

you can then in another object get:

name: r(4)

This means the name field has a pointer to object 4, end result is the "name" is *also* a string 5 bytes long for hello.

The second unknown number found in "o" objects (O stands for generic object, this is the entry for a generic serialized java-object if I am interpreting it correctly) is a version number, related to the version of the program doing the serializing OR it might be related to the version in which the object was last changed. the default Response and Request objects for instance almost always have version "1", but other objects in my testing I've found to have version "240". (and when jphastings wrote his code it was version 223). I have also seen version -1 on media information objects but I think they are weird objects that either don't have a version configured for them or the writers of air-video forgot to add a version attribute to the object.
jphastings seems to have figured this out at some time during his code, as he does label the field "version" when serializing his objects back into a byte stream.

Live conversion as it stands will not work.

Live conversion uses a format popularised by apple. the so called: "HTTP Live Streaming" system has only been implemented in iOS (iPhone/iPad etc) and in Apple QuicktimeX (the latest version of quicktime on Macs).
There is really really horrible* support in "Mplayer" (a version of media player that looks a lot like media player classic - are they the same?). VLC claims to have limited support in version 1.2.0 (the unstable development branch right now), but it is a lie. (at least it wont play any AirVideo streams, and it completely craps out on the odd stream I tried hosted on Apples website). It is important to note that VLC dies differently with airvideo than it does with Apples stream, I can't even begin to understand why.

The only solution I can see effectively restricts the use of AirVideo on PC to the pre-converted videos (or those that conversion has been initiated and completed with earlier).

I have done some experimenting, and by downloading every one of the segments and dumping them into a single file, I could get Mplayer to play it (but it played it at the wrong speed - about 2x). Windows Media Player (of all things) appeared to play this (naively rejoined) file quite well. However I have yet to try consecutively downloading and playing at the same time. (I don't know how windows media player will take it).

Overall, I enjoyed spending the time writing my C# app (with lots of hints from jphastings ruby code) and even got to the point where I could effectively emulate the AirVideo server if I wanted. (part of testing my code was converting from the response code into objects I understand and back again, then comparing the original with what I converted back). With lots of tweaks and effort I got this pretty accurate.

* Mplayer is horrible (when it works which is not with AirVideo!) because between every segment (roughly every 10 seconds) it visibly pauses (I assume to begin the request for the next segment) and to top it off; plays the video at the wrong speed. (at least the version of mPlayer *I* tried did this). Not all versions did even this!


If anyone knows of any programs that can play these live streams nicely on windows (or even linux, even though I don't use it) Please tell me! (and everyone in this post/forum). You can test anything you have by trying out the apple one: http://qthttp.apple.com.edgesuite.net/1010qwoeiuryfg/sl.m3u8 - which is the apple October 2010 event (or something, haven't actually watched this beyond the odd 30 second segment and a bit of seeking...). This stream works on the iPhone/Pad and I haven't tested it but I assume QuicktimeX for Mac. (current version of Quicktime for PC is 7.something).

There is one potential light at the end of the tunnel. But it is a horrible sickly coloured light of more work and pain. That is Silverlight. It supports a [i]similar in concept[b] but not execution[/b][/i] form of HTTP live streaming. It is possible, that *maybe* with some horrible code you could convert the m3u8 files used by the apple Http live streaming into the "manifest" files that silverlight live streaming uses and *maybe* *somehow* the codecs used at the end of the day are actually the same format, and maybe with this method a silverlight player just might play the files OK.
Did I have enough conditional statements in there? Probably not. I tried for half an hour to get my head around using silverlight, but Microsoft for once has some god awful documentation on this. Or at the very least no one is using it thus Google just returns junk links. (This is actually surprising in recent times Microsoft is usually the best in my experience for documenting how to do things with its new technologies).

Air Video Devs might like to hear about it. (do they even read this post any more - maybe I will PM them this?)

JWPlayer, developer for a long time of flash video playing apps (since flash v5), has started development (according to the ticket created during development around 20 months ago) and appears to have recently finished, getting support for Apples "HTTP Live Streaming" into JWPlayer. At the moment it is a beta plugin that a web-host can add to give their jwplayer access to the functions, but I imagine it will be rolled in to the main jwplayer eventually.

Unfortunately. (and it truly is unfortunate :/)

He only supports AVC video (h264, this is normal) and AAC audio.

For some reason (I am not sure why?) AirVideo produces AVC video (yay) and mp3 audio (boo). Now, there is nothing stopping jwplayer from playing mp3 audio other than the support just hasn't been added for this particular component. And in my experience the encoding cost of going to AAC instead of MP3 is non existent (correct me please if I am wrong!). So for this player to work, it is going to take either air-video to change the command they send to their custom FFMpeg (to make it spit out AAC encoded audio in its videos) or JWPlayer to extend support of more audio codecs in their HLS (apples streaming system) support module.

Now why do I think this is something AirVideo devs should at least look at?

They have in the past mentioned something along the lines of "we are considering a silverlight app".

I presume this was because no one else had a player that was multiplatform (mac / PC / Linux) that was *also* capable of doing some kind of Adaptive bitrate switching. Due to licensing restrictions, it is basically illegal for them to do this. This means the only final avenue of getting this to work is to get mp3 support for mp4videos into flash. And my googling so far indicates that this is a limitation of flash. (it will ONLY play AAC audio when it sees h264 video as near as I can tell).

Thanks for this info boaz, changing the m3u8 is actually very possible. Its just changing the .TS files themselves that would be a bit much.

There's no reason why a program can't download the m3u8, and regenerate one with fully qualified URLs in it, and then get vlc to play *that* instead. As long as the URLs point to the remote-video files theres no trouble! This gives me new hope. I'll try it out in VLC now.

Yeah it worked, except like mplayer it has the same issue where it doesn't prefetch the upcoming TS files. So for the current air video server for instance it plays 4 seconds of video, then pauses as it loads the next video. It does appear to play the videos at the correct pace however, so they got that much right. (and better than the version of mplayer I used).

It may just be that I have to tweak my VLC settings, but it certainly isn't a simple matter of just pointing VLC at it just yet.

I am downloading that code at nneonneo.blogspot.com now, going to have a look to see if that plays better.

That's an interesting approach, just restream the TS file segments all as one file...much cleaner than the only other option I could think of, which was to effectively dump it to a file and try to play the file. Sometimes you need someone to remind you of the other easier ways to do things.
(as it is, I was considering how much work it would be to implement live-[b][i]re[/i][/b]-restreaming - intercept the TS files and re-encode the audio to AAC and then let the flash JW player do the rest).

I would recommend giving VLC a shot at playing the re-joined TS file... it might just work. (I am about to go and try!)

WRT to media players, other than the small amount of code hacking I've had to do to try and get a VLC player into my C# app, I really know very little. I have played around _a lot_ with sockets etc in c#, lets see if I can't get your idea working with something like VLC as the output.

There's no seeking, I even had it playing in the embedded VLC player I have (but it crashed a lot ... not sure I can be bothered figuring it out, launching a new VLC window might be the easiest way to do this - AND it doesn't require a library that might go out of date any second).

I wish I didn't have to do this, the loss of all the advantages of air video (nice seeking, low overhead program - now becomes *no* seeking, and the program is sitting directly between the air video streaming server and the player, rather than just pointing a player at the air video streaming system like I wish).

But it works better than not at all. (my one test crashed after 1 minute, but it is the most horrible code, it literally just downloads each TS file and spits it out on the stream to the client - usually vlc - without any reprocessing at all.).

So, dumping the TS files all into a stream and playing it with VLC works. But I don't like that. We can do that with the current tools we got just fine, (play a pre-converted video is a solved problem).

I couldn't stop thinking that our real problem was that inmethod had a patent issue with generating AAC files, and that's fine, they are a company and they have revenue and not-being-sued-out-of-existence to think about. (we all actually *want* an air video in the first place right?).

So, maybe I could make a little piece of software to sit between air-video-server and any prospective air-video-client that HAS one of these evil nasty patent infringing encoders (read: FFMpeg with AAC encoding compiled in) and ... live-re-encode the audio as it passes on its way out (leave everything else untouched).
It wasn't easy, but I got that much done.

So, next job. Examine the Open Source Apple Segmenter, and try and figure out just what it does to the video it outputs. And do THAT to my TS files. Lets hope that is all that's missing. Knowing my luck, there is a long way to go. Or a new way to try and fail at.

As an aside, maybe I'll try and clean up my client code and work on the UI and release something for people to play with. Maybe even implement the basics (play pre-converted videos etc). Play the live-streaming video out to VLC and whatever else I have managed to get it doing. Problem is, that isn't the fun stuff! but it should still work.

I think one of the things that we are all interested in is the ability to drag the slider to a new position in the video stream. So far none of the implementations that I have seen using WMP or VLC have been able to do that. I have an idea that might work. If we embedded a Windows Media Player ActiveX control into a C# windows form we could create our own controls to control WMP. We could add a slider bar at the bottom of the form to re-position the video. Dragging the slider bar would tell the shim to calculate the right segment in the playlist to fetch. Then it start downloading from there and restart the WMP control at that point. Of course we would have to use Tenya's proxy idea since WMP does not work with files which are being written to on the fly.

I've started down that path by embedding a WMP control in a C# windows form, but I need some help with the code that downloads the segments and proxies them. I've attached a sample solution that embeds the WMP control onto a form with a few of the buttons and the slider in place. The button are not skinned but I think it will work nicely regardless. But it requires external player; the seek bar is on File Navigator (it should be with player's video panel, but unfortunately ActiveX control cannot be used on wxRuby); it is somewhat slow; it eats several ten MBs of main memory during the live conversion, and more. For [b]Windows only[/b]. Tested on Win7 64bit, with VLC 1.1.8. Its not "good", its certainly not finished, and it requires .net 4 (I assume, haven't actually tried it on something that isn't a development box, so it might not work at all even if you have .net 4 installed). You must have VLC installed. And if you have a 32bit machine you are going to have to find it again (theres a button labeled "Find VLC").
- once you have 'found' it remember to click save settings. (for the next time you launch my program, if you ever do)
the default password (the *'s) is "password", if your server has no password, you don't need to worry, the value is ignored, if it does, it will complain. This is saved with the "Save settings" button also. (along with the server).
Default server address is localhost:45631, if you don't know what that means, you might not want to bother with this program.

The code is bad. and by bad I mean it doesn't clean up after itself sometimes (VLC gets left behind). the UI needs work (a stop button anyone?) it needs to tell you the state of the buffers, it needs to let you choose the video bitrate you want. (right now it requests 256, 384 and 512 kbps bitrates, you can switch between these - but it doesn't wipe out the buffer, it doesn't sort them so they could be in any order, and the buffer is either (I don't know why its either) 40, or 400 seconds long. (so you can change the bitrate, wait 10 seconds, change the bitrate again, wait 10 seconds and what will happen is eventually (after around 40 seconds) it will switch to the first changed bitrate, then ~10 seconds later switch to the second changed bitrate. You can speed this up by moving the seek-bar, the seek bar ditches the buffer immediately.

Subtitles is black magic right now. (it tells you if there *are* subtitles, and they do actually seem to come in the output (sometimes), but I don't know why! - I don't actually tell it to use subtitles!).
This program probably can't display anything other than english, and languages that look a lot like english.
I have run this, and crashed my air video server atleast once. (with much older code, but the server ceased running, no bluescreen or anything). If you can't restart your AirVideoServer easily (and you want to use it on your iDevice) Don't run this.
The error messages in this program are useless. (just before you think you can really fix anything by listening to them). And I might not catch all possible errors!

It shouldn't have a virus in it, and I run Microsoft Security Essentials, but no guarantees (run your own AV, protect yourself!)

I does not work so good with mkv files. I cannot choose an audio stream, there is no preview image for mkv... but VLC plays fine. Very odd.

Yeah it does need a bit of work re MKV files.

There seems to be the most issues where its on the "actual" network. It appears sometimes the requests for thumbnails get ignored, I have to do some more wiresharking to see exactly whats going on there.

I have also had some comments about the stream selection in general (I think it happens when the file has streams in a different order to Video = stream 0, and Audio = stream 1, I have some rudimentary code to try to cover this, but it doesn't seem to be working particularly well.

I already posted this in the Support forum and now I see there is some chatter in this thread that may be more relevant. I'm not sure if this is a supported feature. I have the Air Video service setup on my Windows 7 Media Center and Live Conversion works perfectly to my iPad and iPhone. However, I'm testing out the Mac Air Video Client on my Macbook and everytime I try to stream using Live Conversion it fails to even start converting the video. Does anyone have any insight they can offer into why this might be?

It's an embedded player that wants Flash Video (FLV) transcoding — which is at the root of the poor results my contacts and I have gotten — but at least the whole setup is basically platform-independent. If there were an Air Video client for Windows as there is for Macs, then that Subsonic advantage would pretty much vanish ...

The Mac Air Video client is freeware, but there is no really good reason why its developer couldn't charge for it. Someone who develops a Windows client could charge for it as well ...

For those wondering why this wont launch in VLC, is likely because they are clicking on the "live stream" link.
This is all related to one big very annoying thing. (I keep coming back to it, there is no 100% solution yet).

Live streaming to iPhones uses a protocol invented by apple. Its great. page 12 someone mentions Adobe are even going to add support to flash media server. Unfortunately this is one-way support.

I have turned into what I like to think is a kind of expert on live streaming right now. (because of this project).

There are only 2, really good implementations of Apples Live streaming clients.
QuicktimeX on MacOS. (there is no windows version of QuicktimeX, only Quicktime 7 and earlier)
Apples iOS devices (all iphones ipad etc).

Just recently, Google added *almost* awesome support for the protocol. It works on their tablets, I have one I have tried it. Its good enough. It skips (or pauses for long enough to notice, but less than half a second) when it changes bitrate. (IE if you have a really good internet connection, it will stutter a couple of times as it goes to higher and higher quality versions of the stream) but other than this, it basically works. The player isn't as highly integrated into the web browser as the iOS one is (into Safari on the iPad for example) but it is early days.

VLC has moderate support for the protocol in beta builds (they may have entered stable releases, but I am not sure), but it is flawed. You can't skip (ie fast forward). It has no capacity to rewind or fast forward. It doesn't tell you how long is left etc. If anyone ever tried my player, it is like that, except imagine it had no interface, no skipping, I don't even know if it supports changing of the bitrate. (I couldn't see it doing it, I suspect it doesn't ever change).

JWPlayer (a flash media player for websites) has beta support. It really is the closest thing to a cross platform solution. It doesn't work 100% with Air Videos streams. (The streams created using the opensource segmenter that Apple released - according to the JWplayer dev it is buggy and doesn't do everything the closed-source Apple segmenter does, I don't understand audio and video *de*coding, but I trust what the JWPlayer dev says when he says it isn't right). Overall though, it works acceptably. (except 1 big issue, which I must admit the version of my player available on page 10/11 might still suffer, I don't know if I released an update) It can't play the final segment of any file (usually a 10 second bit gets cut from the end of the open-source segmenter generated streams).

My client had to do 2 things. Talk to Air Video, and finally after talking to air video, it had to play the live streams. Without any native windows client (that worked - this was before JWPlayer had support mind you) And that is what I made. I used the Ruby script that is the basis for the Mac Client to begin deconstructing the protocol, but had to work most of it out myself. (the code is written in c#, and is therefore Windows only). And for the live-stream player I wrote some (probably pretty bad, but basically working) code to kind of - act as a go-between between VLC player, and AirVideo so that it can play the streams. (you can skip forward/backward, but you have to manually change the bitrate - I haven't yet worked up the courage to try to implement adaptive bitrate into my code).
My programs are all horribly buggy, I have seen them crash my AirVideoServer for no apparent reason.

I might revisit my windows client and see if there is anything I can clean up in it. I seem to have gotten interested in the project again after several months off.

Maybe I'll implement the adaptive part of the adaptive protocol. I used that code to come up with a windows client I did write at a later point. (not the one that Tenya posted, that was Tenya using the original mac code)

My windows client is somewhere else in this rats nest of posts (if you can look at my profile, and look at all my past posts that is probably the easiest way to find it). My windows client isn't what I'd call great, but it "works" (mostly).

I just came from using Air Playit and it does not work "perfectly". I was able to stream over every network that I used, but after a few hrs after setting it up, I could no longer access it without having to go to the source computer and reset a few options (no go when your out and about).

But what I did enjoy about it was the fact that it created that basic web page with links to your files. Thats all that really needs to happen to have this wonderful client preform for everyone.

I'm a Windows developer also and the minimum requirements for a suitable client here would be:

- The ability to (re)stream remotely. I want to run this server at home and watch from work.. like serving your own Netflix.
- Seeking compatibility
- Ability to choose full-resolution streaming, or bandwidth-based transcoding like the iOS app.

Has work on this ceased or has anyone met these requirements? Only a few of these links still work and this thread is ages old. InMethod, why are you not doing this?!

It works on Win 7/64 so far with Air video 2.4.6 Beta 3.
But I have a question.
It works only when you supply IP of server ( assuming it's static IP and it's public or has NAT transfer.)
On Ipad, Air Video client asking only for Server PIN number in 9 digits, like 123 456 789 format
Does not mater if Server IP change or no.
Is it possible to create the same function in your client instead of IP?

Just was looking on the log in DOS window, I guess I know why I can't connect by PIN number.
Connection try to go by Public IP to another PC on LAN, and this PC behind the firewall. No NAT setup for this.
In this scenario, no big deal, I can connect by LAN IP, and for home servers it works fine.

I've created AirVideoClient with higher maximum resolution for live conversion. Now it is set to 1280x720 (before was 640x480). Inspiration to Tenya - please make select box under Bitrate selection, where we can choose width - 640, 800, 960 and 1280. I think, that is for you work for 5 minutes..

I installed the windows client and it connects to my server, but it does not display what is in my subfolders. What am i doing wrong? It does display video files on the root folder though.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That's an interesting approach, just restream the TS file segments all as one file...much cleaner than the only other option I could think of, which was to effectively dump it to a file and try to play the file. Sometimes you need someone to remind you of the other easier ways to do things.
(as it is, I was considering how much work it would be to implement live-[b][i]re[/i][/b]-restreaming - intercept the TS files and re-encode the audio to AAC and then let the flash JW player do the rest).

I would recommend giving VLC a shot at playing the re-joined TS file... it might just work. (I am about to go and try!)

WRT to media players, other than the small amount of code hacking I've had to do to try and get a VLC player into my C# app, I really know very little. I have played around _a lot_ with sockets etc in c#, lets see if I can't get your idea working with something like VLC as the output.

If only VLC could register the time code with live conversion, without live conversion the video spikes in upload speed on the server and the video becomes unstable. It's very hard to figure out where a specific scene / chapter is in a video without a time duration. I'm assuming the reason why this works with the Air Video mobile version is that they are using an internal media player that's built into the app and has been modified to fit the applications needs. Where as the desktop version is using an external media player via VLC which either doesn't like live conversion with a time code, or is not implemented to work with it. Maybe create an internal media player so that it works directly with the application? Hopefully this can be fixed somehow. Right now it's either choose to "Play with" VLC (Windows Media Player or Quick Time Player doesn't work) and get the benefit of having a time duration with upload spikes and unstable video or choose to "Play with Live Conversion" with no time code, though I get no upload spikes or unstable video.

Would someone be willing to collaborate and make a fully loaded windows version with all the bells and whistles? Am all for it, I can provide the graphics needed and layout the design for the application. Here is a sample below of what I had started a few days ago. I stuck with the same concept as the mobile version, though there is still room for changing.

I've got this problem in local LAN ( see my old post in this topic). In the SAME LAN I use connection by IP address, not PIN. And it works fine.
