Remote Access doesn't work

Often remote access works out of the box, but sometimes it doesn't and it can be tricky to setup. If you can't get it to work, we're here to help. However keep in minds that we get tons of emails and forum questions. Email saying nothing but "I can't get 3G access working" will not get your problem resolved. We're not magicians. The more you say about your network setup the bigger chances of you getting help are.

For users without experience with network configuration it's recommended to try Air Video Free first. If you are unable to get remote access working and the feature is crucial for you, it's better to find it out before you purchase the paid application.

There are some things to do before you ask for help:

1. Follow the remote access tutorial
2. No luck? There's the troubleshooting

There are two major hurdles that can cause your computer not be accessible from internet:

1. Port forwarding
Air Video Server attempts to configure port forwarding on your router automatically, however that is often not possible, mostly because router doesn't support properly (or at all) the UPnP protocol. If there is any sign that port forwarding hasn't been done properly, your best bet is to configure it manually. Log in to your router settings and add new port forwarding entry - port 45631, protocol TCP. The forwarding IP address needs to be IP address of your computer

The site portforward.com can be very helpful when manually configuring port forwarding for Air Video. In some cases you might still need to consult your router manual though.

2. Double NAT
The double NAT problem is described in depth here.

How to ask for help

To be able to help you we need as much information as possible. The most important piece is the remote support log. This is how to get it:
1. Quit Air Video Server
2. Start Air Video Server
3. Wait until Air Video Server is done initializing
4. Go to Air Video Properties - "Logs" tab.
5. Chose "remote-support" log. There are multiple logs, the remote support one is relevant here
6. Select the log, copy to clipboard (ctrl+c) and paste to email

The log contains your public IP address and server PIN. It's not a good idea to post it in forum. Always email the log to support (at) inmethod.com instead

If you attempted to configure port mapping manually, we will need to see some screenshots:
1. Screenshot of port forwarding configuration in your router settings - we need this to double check that the port forwarding is configured properly
2. Screenshot of the router status page. This usually display information like WAN IP address, connection type, etc. We need to rule out double NAT problem.

If you have the remote support log and screenshot, last thing to do is to describe your network configuration. First we need to know what kind of internet connection do you have. Is it a cable modem? DSL modem? Fibre? Also we need to know what devices (routers and modems) are on your network. If possible, please provide the manufacturer name and model type for each device.

If you are using a 3rd party firewall (Zonealarm, Norton internet security, Ashampoo, ...) please mention that. It's a significant thing, those are often getting in the way.

UPDATE: Some time later after looking around online for solutions to Double NAT and after reviewing your post about it. I have input my IP address online and it required a login/pass which I had no idea what they were. But, thinking to try it again to see if it says anything else of importance it now says that it is accessible from the Internet. Can you please explain to me why this is and will i eventually go back to Double NAT? Also, I had tried enabling it multiple times to see if it would work before, but it didn't.

Thanks for the reply. Can you point me to more information about using my own IP address? I did try that, with no luck (I have a static one, so I know it will work). The program is clearly reaching my computer using the traditional method -- when I put in the server PIN, it comes back with the correct "name" for my computer, which it couldn't know otherwise -- but the program won't go further.

What would help most is a step-by-step mini-tutorial, along the lines of (1) get your IP; (2) put it in here; (3) use this port setting; (4) put the port setting in the following places; (5) restart the program; etc.

GD

Have you read the first post in this thread?

Your router either needs to support UPnP properly in which case Air Video Server will configure the port forwarding for you.

If your router doesn't support UPnP, you need to forward port 45631 / TCP to your computer. Which is likely your case. If you need help with this I'd need to see your remote support log as well as some router settings screenshots (described in first post). Don't post those here, send them to support(at)inmethod.com .

I am getting frustrated, probably due to my own lack of knowledge or skills when it coms to networking. I have an iPod Touch and an iPad which, when at home, seem to be able to access the server through my Belkin N+ router and I am able to play videos. However, for the life of me, I can't get remote access to work which is the real reason I bouth the app. Everytime I try, I seem to get different results and error messages. Sometimes I get an "URL Resolve Error", sometimes I get an apologetic "tracker is down" message, and frequently it just sits there until it times out. Regardless of the message, I have yet to have it find my folders via remote access.

I have manually set up the port forwarding for 45631 and I'm guessing I did that right if I am able to get to my folders and videos via w-fi when I am home. Any ideas or things I can try? I am desperately wanting to get the remote access working.

Re:Remote Access doesn't work

I too seem to be having the same problems discussed within this thread. Here's my situation... I am currently connected to my home wi-fi service. My remote access works with no problems. The program finds my folder and all the movies within that folder. As soon as I connect to my iTouch to a VPN client, the program no longer can find my folder. I am continually getting a "tracker service seems to be down" message. Now, I do know that other people that I work with have been able to connect to their Air Video servers through this same VPN Client so I don't believe there is a firewall blocking access. What else could be the problem? Could there be an issue with connecting to my work VPN while still using my home wi-fi? I have not tried connecting through my work wi-fi, but I don't believe it would make a difference. However, what do I know right? Ha Ha.

I have also set up port forwarding as described. Upnp and NAT are both enabled. Is there something else I should be doing?

Thank you,
-Bob

I finally got his to work. I could not get remote access to work without running Lighthouse from Codelaide software, and manually enabling UPnP on my router. Lighthouse is a utility that with automatically forward ports you designate for certain applications. I set up Lighthouse to recognize when I was running Air Video, and it does the rest. I don't know why manually forwarding ports using my router's interface didn't work. Just thought I'd share this with the board.

Re:Remote Access doesn't work

I have a software conflict. I have both Air Video and EyeTV. Part of EyeTV is EyeConnect (server). It allows the EyeTV iPhone app to connect to your Mac. Unfortunately when EyeConnect is running, I can't connect to Air Video. Both stream videos to the iPhone. Air Video is light years ahead of EyeTV. It's stable, reliable and works just great. I would't even need EyeTV except the one feature that works well, is that you can schedule the Mac to record a show remotely. Ideally I would use EyeTV to schedule a recording of a show and Air Video to watch a show.

So I am trying to figure out a away both servers can be running and allow access to the Mac. Has anyone had this problem and figured out a way around it?

Air Video is clearly the better product here. I will stick with it. But being able to record a show remotely would be great.

Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.4
AirVideo 2.2.7u1
EyeTV 3.4.2 (6181)

First off, my specs: windows 7 home premium. Firewalls off. 2wire AT&T router. Port 45631 forwarded tcp and udp (tried both), listening to port 45631 on air server and iPad. Air server auto map is off (since windows 7 home don't have rdp and ports are done manually as mentioned before.).

I've used the testing feature and it says air server is accessible from the Internet. But won't work on external connections. Local wifi works fine. Weird thing is, my vnc server works fine on external. Air video gives me the server is not reachable error. I have also tried with dmz off too. Not sure what else I can do... Thinking it is either a router problem, app problem, or windows 7 problem. I also tried with my pin and ipaddress(not 192.168.xx.xx, the 69.xx.xx.xx) as well as dyndns.org address.

Dunno why vnc works but air server doesn't. Also, there are no conflicting ports. Any ideas?

Re:Remote Access doesn't work

I'm not sure what the "scam" is. Did anyone ask you for your bank account or credit card info?

I'm an AirVideo user for about 6 months now and use remote access just fine from my iPad and iPhone 4 with servers running on both my mac laptop and a windows VM on a Linux box (I wish the Linux Alpha 4 was a little bit better. But it's alpha, so I get it.)

Aside from AT&T's horrible 3G network in the NYC area & surrounding suburbs I have no problems whatsoever. I've streamed from remote wifi, remote wifi over a clear 4G connection in Manhattan, Verizon 3G mifi devices, and from local networks.

While the developers of AirVideo take a lot of steps to make remote streaming work pain-free, there's a lot that goes on in the back end. There's issues with NAT, potentially blocked ports from your ISP, port forwarding, low upstream bandwidth on your home broadband, UPnP, dynamic home IPs, and a myriad other reasons that remote access wouldn't work. I find they do an excellent job of making it "just work" in many scenarios I've tested but at the end of a day you're still trying to punch a hole in a home firewall, overcome NAT, and have a reliable way of knowing where that home server is actually running due to Dynamic IP allocations. If you don't understand networks and technology then you just might not have what it takes to troubleshoot the issue. Furthermore, I've seen the admins jump in and help many times to help end users troubleshoot remote access issues that are a result of the user or the user's ISP configuration.

How would you feel if you sold a car to someone and then got personally called to fill in every pothole on the roads they drive on with the car? These guys go above and beyond the call of duty. They sold you a product that does indeed work and do what it's supposed to, but if your setup doesn't work then why is it their fault?! Yet they STILL take the time to help troubleshoot these issues in the name of good customer service.

If you care enough to understand why remote access might not work in your case, try buying a book and learning a little bit about the technology at play. Perhaps "Networking for Dummies" (excellent series of technology books for beginners) would be a good place to start. Otherwise you need to be patient and wait for these guys to have some time to help troubleshoot issues that are caused by *YOUR* (or your internet service provider's) setup.

I whole heartedly assure you that if you take the time to figure out what's going wrong (and perhaps even learn a bit about that mysterious box you call the "router" or "modem" that connects you to the internet) you'll find Air Video is a far superior product to the others out there and does the job extremely well.

Please don't post here accusing the excellent people who develop and support Air Video of perpetuating a scam just because you don't understand why your particular situation doesn't work.

**BTW** after re-reading the post from the first page, they urge people to try the *FREE* version and *MAKE SURE IT WORKS* first before buying a paid version. How exactly is giving your app away for free so people can test it first a scam?!

Wow, thefloyd, thanks for the post. Air Video is not a spam. The remote connection might be complicated to setup sometimes, unfortunately there are reasons for that that go way beyond what we can affect.

(The reason why Zumocast works even in cases when Air Video does not is that in cases like that they route all traffic through external servers. However that is very expensive (bandwidth cost) and it is probably the cause why they planned to charge $29.99 for the premier plan).

Re:Remote Access doesn't work

If you're too scared to get into changing your network settings and doing all that geeky stuff, get an IT to guide you through it, because if you have this hackish type app only because it sounds cool and aren't ready for some trial and error, good luck. This is with use with an Ipod Touch 3g over WiFi. Here's what I found works with me. First day of setup with AV it worked perfectly. I used a Windows 7 PC with a Netgear wireless router/modem. Installed it and found it connected pretty well. After changing my router location and adding the PC to the LAN, Air Video basically gives me the finger. That's when all the difficultes started. I accessed my Netgear router admin., but it doesn't let you manually change any settings in UpNp. Bottom line: Air Video doesn't work when LAN is in the picture, however to make things finally work, I disabled my LAN adapter in adapter settings, refreshed my UpNp settings with Netgear, deleted any and all servers from my Ipod Touch, stopped the AV server, disabled the remote access, and uninstalled the Air Video software. I then reinstalled the Air Video Server; readded the local and remote servers to the Ipod, enabled the Remote on the software, then selected automatically map port, and it connected. I tested the internet connection, and everything was golden. Afterwards which (and only afterwards) I re-enabled the LAN in adapter settings and the internet connnection test in Air Video still passed. I'm willing to bet if I restart my computer or disconnect the power from my router, the connection will screw up again, unless I have my LAN adapter disabled. Which i did disable before a trip to Mexico, where I was watching movies from my home in SF Bay Area, CA. The wifi signal where I was located in Mexico was low due to my distance from the router, and watching my movie was like listening to stuttering John.

Re:Remote Access doesn't work

If this has been mentioned by others already then please forgive me, but hopefully it can help some of you...

I downloaded Air Video Server the other day and it was working just fine at home on my local network, but like many of you when I got off the local network and tried to access the server anywhere else it just wouldn't work. This frustrated me greatly, and I started out trying to figure it out. I downloaded various programs to help, port forwarding, I followed the guides here, and nothing worked. Now to be fair that is likely because I had no idea what I was doing, but still.

Anyway, I changed a few things in my network and router settings, and I screwed something up. My router wouldn't work at all and I ended up having to have a direct connection to my PC without my router involved. I pretty much ruined everything that runs off of my local WiFi.

So I found a guide for my Linksys router about how to start form scratch. I pretended that I had just bought my router and installed it from the start all over again, step by step. I set out to do this just to get my WiFi going again and have everything set up as it was before, and Air Video wasn't even in my mind.

Well, in doing so, starting totally from scratch, I discovered that not only did t set my WiFi connection back up and was running perfectly, but by doing that it also fixed every problem I was having with the Air Video Server! It is now working perfectly without a single flaw.

So, if you have tried various other things and you haven't had any luck I highly suggest doing as I did and starting from scratch by totally setting up your router and everything all over again. It may be a big headache, but it worked perfectly for me.

And I didn't even do it intentionally.

Log in to PC at home, server looks good.
I have tried to restart the server. no luck.
I have tried to uninstall and reinstall the stable version. no luck.
I have reinstalled the latest beta. no luck.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the app. no luck.
I have forwarded the port, and disabled auto mapping. no luck.

Right now, if I switch to UPnP detection, it just keeps searching. I am guessing that my UPnP is messed up. So I uncheck the auto mapping button, and it says ok.
I press the test button, I get a message that the server is accessible from the internet.
However, my ipad still tells me server is not reachable. I am on a remote wi-fi connection, not 3G.

Any ideas at all? (This is why we don't update working software, and why we can't have pretty things)

Thanks for any suggestions!

Hi there,

I read everything I could but unufortunately without meeting the desired effect.
I forwarded my port manually as per PortForward site and ticked the remote access box and unticked the automatically one. When I launch the connection test it says that air video is NOT accessable to internet, altough immediately after the system reboot I am actually able to connect for couple of minutes ( I even managed to convert one episode of Scrubs - however soundless - any ideas what this could be?) but as soon I get relogged then I'm keep getting the 'unreachable error"

I own iPad 2 32gig wifi only version
Windows xp on my laptop (no 3rd parties firewalls)
Of course the PIN box is filled as well

I appreciate any kind of advice, thank you so much

Enduros

Sent from my iPad

Re:Remote Access doesn't work

I just bought AirVideo for iPhone and so far I'm impressed with the speed, quality and stability of the real-time conversion. Had the local wifi bitrate on maximum with absolutely no stuttering! Also love having the video-out support.

When I first tried enabling remote access, the connection test failed saying my router didn't support UPnP/NAT. However, my router does support UPnP and the router's internal configuration screen indicated that uPnP was enabled and working.
Anyway, I then tried disabling and re-enabling uPnP in the router, saving the router configuration, and then I re-tried the AirVideo connection test ..... and it worked! I guess the uPnP mustn't have hung up or something. Will try remotely accessing my videos when I get a chance.

Btw, does AirVideo support streaming of recorded TV programs from a digital TV tuner (.wtv format)? When I try to play them in AirPlay it says the files are "invalid" and must be converted first, but there's no option appearing to convert them?

Cheers

FOUND THE ANSWER

I have found that those with the antivirus ESET or NOD32 are having difficulty with connecting. I have discovered how to make the connection work!

1. open ESET
2. At the bottom left click on standard mode (change)
3. now that your in advanced mode click on setup > then personal firewall
4. click on advanced firewall setup and make sure the box says automatic with exceptions.
5. Click ok then click on configure zones and rules > NEW > Name it whatever you want (i used "Air Video")
6. Direction Both, Action Allow, TCP and UDP,
7. check LOG, Go to the local tab, Add port, name is FTP-data, Number is your air video port(by default 45631)
8. for application, find your air video application. (NOT THE SHORTCUT)
9. Go to the remote tab, click on add ipv4, type in the ip address of your ipod or iphone.
10. Click ok then Apply, Ok again and your done!!!!

For different Antivirus or firewall protections, in your firewall settings make a rule to allow your ipods ip address to access port 45631(or custom) to exceptions for network traffic.

If i helped you please leave me an email at Shadow000Ninja@hotmail.com with the subject "Air Video TY"
Dont send a message to my account on this forum because i will not come back to post more
i hope i helped, Good luck!!!

Re:Remote Access doesn't work

I'm running the Linux Air Video Server (Alpha 6 & FFMpeg) on a ReadyNas Ultra Network Storage device located on my home network. Air Video works great when I'm on my home network on both my iPad and iPhone. I can even broadcast to my Apple TV using AirPlay which is fantastic! However, when I attempt to log on remotely (at my office for instance), I get the following error: "Your Air Video Server version seems to be outdated. Recommend server version 2.4.0". I hit OK and the program locks up, requiring a reboot, or just crashes. I understand 2.4.0 is for Windows or Mac OS, not Linux, so I don't think I can load either of these on my ReadyNas unit. The Readynas unit is behind a Verizon router and I have port forwarding set up on that router. I have set up the iPad Air Video App using the Specify Address Manually, inputting the Router's IP address and the port I have set up to forward to: 212. I assume the App is getting through to the machine given the error message; as in fact I'm not running the new 2.4.0 Server software. Any advice is welcome. Jason

I finally got the air video program to work remotely by port forwarding the default port 45631 on my verizon home router. When I tried to forward a different port that was already open to my ReadyNas unit (202) it would not work; even when input in the port box on the manual set up section of the iPad app. So if you are having trouble with remote access, I suggest using the air video default port 45631 when setting up forwarding through your router.

Hey, guys!

I have tried everything from the first post but to no avail. My Air Video 2.4.3 was working properly, but overnight it just can't connect anymore. The status shows "Error sending status report. Will try in 5 minutes. If this keeps happening please report to support@inmethod.com"

Right now I'm using 3G on the iPad because I can't connect any Inmethod site/forum through my home computer. It just won't work. I use the ZTE router here, but I haven't done any changes...any ideas to help me?

Thanks in avance.

Edit: a guy is coming here tomorrow, If he can't solve my problem, I'll come back!

Re:Remote Access doesn't work-MOTOROLA SURFBOARD CABLE MODEM-PROBLEM SOLVED

I sent tech support an email last night but have found the solution for remote access thru trial and error. I wasn't able to get remote access to work unless I put this computer into the DMZ. Port forwarding didn't seem to work. The problem was I had the DMZ set to my Linksys NAS device. For some reason Air Video would be routed to that instead of port forwarding to this computer. Once I set the DMZ back to "192.168.X.0" everything worked fine. I'd had some problems connecting to the NAS previously which is why I had it in the DMZ. But FTP and HTTP forwarding still work so I'm leaving the DMZ off.

I've tested remote access by tethering my iPad to my HTC EVO 4g with a weak 4g signal. Divx videos are watchable with "convert while watch" but will pixelate on occasion. I'm trying the conversion then play option to see how that looks. Luckily most hotels have wireless that's faster than my phone. I'm on the road over half the month so I'll be buying the full version of the app. I was going to spend some $$$$ on a new NAS device with gigabit LAN but don't really need it with Air Video since I won't be needing to transfer videos over to the NAS for downloading onto my iPad
